What octane is best, and why

i started making gas with the 100ll and 92efree gas no tuning problems and it doesnt bulge the cans either. i use gallon jugs to fill my tools with and had one that was only the 92 and one that had the mix and the one with the av gas didnt build pressure like the other jug did with only the efree. not what i expected. they were in the sun but it was only in the 60s

i posted earlier in this thread i think but my blower didnt like the 100ll mixed @40:1 would not tune at all but runs just fine with the 100ll and 92efree mix that i make

It didn’t work. Cans bulged in the sun…dunno if they would actually pop or not…

We would use fire crew pack cans in the mountain parks, but they are at least 20$ a can . They don't swell.

I get along fine with whatever is cheapest at the pump. If you're putting the saw up for storage, break out the synthetics or the fancy no-ethanol stuff. For a saw that actually gets used regularly, whatever's cheap works. Tune the saw for what you burn in it.

Maybe this has been mentioned earlier, but if you're going through that much gas that quickly, is E-free necessary? I thought ethanol's big failing is long term storage. both fuel degrading itself, plus the deterioration of seals and such. If you turn your fuel over every couple days, is regular ethanol fuel still a problem?

No, ethanol is fine to run, just don't let it evap.

Or sit in the saw. Old ethanol gas is the devil.
I’d only run it in small engines if I had too.

Been buying E free 91 5 gall at a time an hour away and storing it, couple months now maybe. No running issues other than I wonder if it loses some pop or power before it really goes bad and causes run issues. I might buy some fresh 87 with E locally just to see.

I find that this new gas goes bad quicker in small quantities. Checked the gas at the farm I work at, it's a 100 gallon tank that's filled every 6 months. That gas always smells fresh, even after 6 months.

Never had a fuel quality related problem in any of my cars and trucks, and I buy the cheapest 87 I can find. I've long been of the opinion that, in a vehicle which is driven regularly and never has the same fuel in it more than a few weeks, corn gas actually keeps the fuel system much cleaner. Alcohol is an excellent solvent, has higher octane, and is much more clean burning than gas. I've read that in some countries ethanol is actually cheaper than gas (or they sell more of their oil to other countries to make $$), so the fuel has a much higher ethanol percentage than here and the vehicles run quite well with it.

I asked him what the benefit of running ethanol mixed with gasoline was and his reply was, ‘the benefit is to the farmers that grow the crops to make it.’

exactly that is the only reason we have ethanol from corn in our gas. i have been saying it for years.

i like to mix my own so i know for sure that there is the right amount of oil in it and its way cheaper. but i can get clear gas at the pump still.

I'm thinking that the only thing water soluble in gasoline would be the ethanol. Of course I don't know this for a fact.
