I spent most of the day cleaning up bars and chains today, remnants of a chainsaw haul over a year ago...I have to get these things out of my way.

The Bauer surface preparation tool has been getting a real workout.

After 60 or 70 bars so far I finally had to replace the original 40 grit drum as it was getting so small the belt drive guard was bottoming out.

There were a few more small bars that did not get buffed as they still had decent paint. I also got to the point that I had to replace the wheel on the bar rail grinder, I'll try to remember to put up some photos tomorrow.

I decided to finish up the rest of the surplus, used bars I have laying around today.

20230801_125848.jpg

Now I have to get the chains cleaned up and sharpened where possible, match them to the bars, and do my best to get them organized and put away so I can find each one again as the need arises. I think I've been through 62 or 63 bars in the past two days and only came up with 3 or 4 that weren't worth any effort at all and went into the scrap tank. Another two will be kept on hand to demonstrate what happens when you don't maintain proper chain tension, use adequate bar lubrication, or fail to perform even the most basic maintenance.

A select few will become part of my "chain display" as there are a some fairly unique ones in the assortment. For example, one has a replaceable hard nose...

I spent most of the day working my way through chains...cleaning, sharpening, setting the depth gauges, and running a few that were a bit rusty and sticky. I had to modify a couple of bars so they would oil properly on the 1-86 (gear drive with the bar on the inside/left). On the other hand, the gear drive saw has plenty of torque so when a chain has a few stiff links it can limber it up quickly enough. I don't have a 3/8 sprocket set up for the gear drive saws but I do have .404, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, and 5/8 sprockets on hand and a variety of bars (different lengths) so I can run many different chains as needed.

The 1/2, 7/16, and several of the .404 chains are not show here.

I took the better part of 4 days but I got through all (well, almost all...) of the extra bars I have on hand, chains cleaned & sharpened, and everything pretty well organized and put away. I found some I'd forgotten along the way and have them sorted out in a fashion that should allow me to find things more easily. I also set aside a few oddities for the chain display like one that would fit the early saws with no oiler holes (the oil was squirted on the top/side of the chain) and the aforementioned replaceable hard nose bar.

I put most of the "active" for sale bars in an area that I can easily access. There are new bars, quite a few nice used bars, and a few that I have set aside for testing/running chain (with a selection of sprockets for the gear drive saws).

I do have a few more bars spread around the shop...

I've consolidated all of the Homelite specific bars in one area (except for some XL bars).

And the one that kicked this all off, the Remington roller nose bar I wanted to clean up and install on the NOS/NIB Remington 75S I picked up recently.

Kolve chain, and big a$$ scratcher chain.

I think @Philbert needs some close up pictures of those!

Got any Barracuda chain?
Philbert has visited the museum. Mark definitely has quite an extensive chain collection! Many I had not seen before.

I do have a few different samples of Auto-Sharp/Power Sharp chain on hand including 1/4", .325, 3/8 LP (classic and current Oregon), and .404.

I cleared some space in the shop so I can try and get the chain samples laid out and attached to the board for my chain display.

It will be nice to have my bench space back again, I think some of the samples have been laying out for 2 years already.
