It’s been a while since I’ve been on the forum. I retired I 2020 and sat on my butt for too long so about 3 years ago I got on a fitness kick, started riding bikes again, hitting the gym and went to work part time in a bike shop.

Things were going well I dropped about 30 lbs and my fitness had really improved. About 6 months ago while getting ready to head out for a ride I had a pneumonia thorax (collapsed lung) the emts got to my place really quick and off to the hospital I want. They inserted a chest tube and had my lung reinflated real quick.

Unfortunately the chest X-rays pointed out an unusual mass in my right lung. It turned out to be cancer stage 1. They performed a robotic lobectomy and removed the upper lobe of my right lung. Lab tests indicate that they got everything and hopefully I’ve avoided chemo.

Recovery has been very slow but lately I’ve been running my sausage stuffed saws cleaning up a lot of stuff around my property which has caused me to think of the guys in this community so I thought I would drop in and say howdy again.

Welcome back!

I've been away myself for a few years. Like you, I had some health issues.

The fact that you're running saw and cleaning your property makes me think you've got the mentality to master your own health.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I was diagnosed with stage 3b squamous cell cancer of the left upper lobe in 2021. They surgically removed the lobe and had to take a section of ribs also and then referred to it as stage 4. The tumor was spreading. Underwent chemo and radiation therapy. My pulmonary function is 68% of normal so I workout regularly to compensate for that. I am feeling great and back helping out on the volunteer fire department. Although the survival rate is 30% in 5 years from diagnosis for that stage of cancer.

It appears it was caught early and with what sounds like a less invasive surgery. Best wishes for the future. There isn’t much empathy for lung cancers it seems.

Wow there were some complications post surgery, it took a month for the lung to seal up but it finally did. I go in For another pft in 2 weeks to compare to the one prior to the surgery, and a get the 6 month CT scan to check the lungs next month too.

I’ll include you in my prayers my challenges seem minuscule compare to yours.

No need to compare, we all have our own mountains and challenges to climb! In no way want to diminish what you have gone through. There are many survivors here in the forum and many of their family members too. We just keep going until our mortal shell has had enough. There are many with thoughts and prayers a plenty to share along the way.

Glad to hear you are doing better and that running a chainsaw is part of your therapy!!

Glad you did well. You probably were “3a”, as “3b” means that it’s unresectable. Restaging at surgery is pretty common.

Immunotherapy has been a game changer with Lung Ca. Thankfully, it ain’t what it used to be.

You’re right about the empathy part. Pretty astute observation. Because lung Ca is more common in smokers, many people feel like it was a self induced illness. We are seeing more and more non smokers with the disease.
