So im waiting for my big saw (084) to get back. And i have a bunch of safety chain that came with my saw so i figured it was good for experiments. First think was un safety ing it.

That's common practice for me too sir. After the first or second file job .... Somtimes that crap is in the way right outta the box

First time I did it was on a 20" forester bar and chain combo. I didn't even try it out first. Took me 5 minutes on the bench grinder taking all the shark fins off. It's actually a really fine cutting chain now

To me it's the answer. You can make anything cut so long as you get a lead edge All that extra stuff just holds the cutter up n out

Well if my phone will allow me to type. What I'm saying is you could take some more off the links that whole damn fin will hold the chain up it'll cut fine as is for awhile When your tooth gets shorter that other crap will hinder you as well

On AS there was a discussion that bantered off into talking about vanguard chain then the other safety chains... Is that one you have a Stihl? I'm not too familiar with it

I was told you should be tedious with a file and stroke it.......... Anyhow.... As long as you don't hurt the actual integrity of the chain In my opinion you're gonna make a good chain outta crap. All that stuff affects the way a chain digs you figured that out for yourself . Your not insane sir carry on

Small cutoff disc on die grinder makes short work of it. That's some ugly safety ramps!

First couple bar/chain Forester combos I bought from OPE shop came with that crap. Since then I insist he sub Carlton chizel for the loop in the package.
