Thanks Duane, I have plenty of chaos, I just don't post pics of it!

I have scratcher chain on a BLK, but that is the only example I have, and Holtec is in the USA but the chain is sold direct to them, not through the dealer network.

That is an incredible setup. Here's my much worse looking sharpening rig

Features include,
Poor quality Oregon knock off grinder
Some scrap metal welded together. Drilled and tapped to mount a grinder on one side and the FG2 on the other.

It gets clamped in the bench vice when it's need and it's only real function is to lift the grinder or FG2 up high so I can see what I'm doing a little better.

The (Patent pending) "sharpening tower of power" is available in the pile of off cut metal pieces located behind my shed. Just watch out for the snakes in the long grass.

Some assembly required.

Squish, that looks great. You do what works for your situation, and being able to store the grinder away when not needed saves room. My grinder station is on wheels but still takes up several square feet of floor no matter where it sits.

I tried a number of things to make my grinder(s) portable, for field use. This is the Oregon stand:

Stable. Easy to move. Legs fold.

But it comes like this:

So, I assembled mine with wing nuts, and repurposed a nylon stuff / storage sack from a folding camp chair to make it easy to store and transport.

Sorry, I got busy on another project and forgot to check.
So you are correct, on the zero scale it is not square with the sliding plate the swivel rest sits on.

So I adjusted the head until it was square and here is the reading on the scale:

So it looks like about 3 degrees off.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. As I understand you performed the check on only one of your grinders? Or have you already noticed that this difference on the A scale looks the same or similar on all of them?
Is it possible to know from which year is the one on which you performed the check?
I'm trying to determine if this problem has existed for a long time or if it has appeared maybe on newer units.

In general, it looks like it is caused by crooked threading on one of the threads (or maybe both?) into which the M12 grub screws are screwed.
This is really strange, especially since the grinder is supposed to be Universal...

Well you are right. The old USG I have, made in the 70's, is true at the zero setting.

(I thought so.)
Thank you again for checking. I don't want to abuse your kindness, but is there any chance to (again?) take a picture of the “hinge” of this grinder where the error does not occur? It would be nice if the A scale was then set to 0.

Is it possible to ask you from which year is this grinder (or grinders), where the difference on the A scale occurs?

This grinder was given to me by a dealer in New Jersey whose Dad started the business back in the '60s and bought it new in the '70s sometime. It had been out of service and got knocked off the bench and broke one of the pivot ears off. You can see a little piece of red metal on the right and the bolt sticking out where I repaired it. It works fine now. As far as the casting goes I don't see a lot of difference but there is a part number cast into this piece and not on the newer two USG's I have. Both of them were put into service sometime around 2008 as best as I recall.

Thanks again!
Is this part number different from the current one (5203 750 1701)? I know there have been a few design changes since the 1970s...
Of course, the current version doesn't say “Made in West Germany” on it either. But I don't know if that could be reason enough to change the part number.

I have to ask, what is the roll of Stihl chain with the old saw tooth logo? Any chance of a close up pic of it?

Is the Oregon rold next to it 59AC?

Looking at the markings it is 3873, or 33 RS. It is also written in marker on the spool: 3/8 RS 050.

Is the Oregon rold next to it 59AC?

My guess is that this is 61AC - 7/16@.058 or 62AC - 7/16@.063.

The sharpening Tower of Power (TM) has been further improved to now facilitate square filing. This optional extra has increased the total cost by $4.78

Thanks to this advanced technology (cheapest vice in the store) it can now be adapted to suit the needs of the square chain enthusiasts.

Or in other words, I put a cheap small vice on it so I can see what I'm doing and it holds the chains still. It's much easier when the chain is up at eye level and doesn't move.

I'm not sure I've seen a vice used to hold another vice before. That's definitely worth a few extra points!
