Dont cut your hinge wood up super close if its leaning hard. Itll sit down on the bar/chain real fast. Basswood sucks. It grows like a weed and you dammed near cant give it away. But the pollen produces some of the best early honey ive ever had. The do allot of handmade carvings out of basswood as well.
Thank you again. It’s worth nearly nothing at the mill at $300 per thousand but at least they buy it. Gotta get some of it out of there to make room for the higher quality trees near them . I’m going to plant some dogwood, butternut and wild apple for critters once I’m done pulling saw logs out of my woods.

If you manage for a high quality stand the critters will come, no need to go out of your way to manage it as a park. At least back most of the “parks” will have less critters per acre then a high quality stand will.

Better keep a sturdy cage around your young trees after you plant them. If not the deer will demolish them.

They call them crop damage tags here.
Back in the 80's when you were lucky to draw a doe tag every other year they had a "landowner" tag, which was a 90% chance of getting a doe permit provided you owned minimum 50 acres.
Now you get a firearm buck tag, archery buck tag, a doe tag with each that is non weapon specific and damn near unlimited bonus anterless permits for purchase.

Absolutely. I’m not gonna go crazy planting stuff, just a few here and there where there are BIG holes in the canopy from logging. I deer hunt on my land so I want to give them some incentive to meet their maker...lol

Do you have any water on your property?
I dug 2 small waterholes, 10'x18' about 2' deep. Used a pond liner in them.
Those brought many more deer around .
Nearest water otherwise is about 1 mile.

Where we see the most deer and elk here are the clear cut normally about two years after they’ve been cut they like those openings. All I was getting at with the picture of the government style of thinning is they went out after we did the thin more like clear cut and planted stuff to attract deer vs the manager for production the deer are there instantly.

I just wanted to thank the guys who gave me recommendations and advice on this tree.

Pretty much like most all you said, I was way over thinking it. It dropped exactly where I wanted it.

My only snafu was that once I started my backcut and drove some wedges in, I ended up driving 1 wedge almost all the way in the cut. After pondering it, I plunged in from that side to get in front of the wedge. I was running the saw with my hands reversed due to location. I dont do that much and need more practice.
Well, it kicked back and slammed the chain into the bar tip, spreading it.

I was pissed and didnt take pics of the tree on the ground.
