Nasty wood like that splits best either on the dark rings or at a 45deg angle to the rings. 90deg to the rings causes it to rip apart. If you let the rounds dry out well, you might get away with splitting on the natural splits in the wood.

Kinda crazy an non college educated fella like myself can ID trees. We have 5 other guys working for us and they know oaks from Maples etc, but off species they dont have the foggiest idea what it is. I got my education from a technical school while I was I'm high school, I enjoyed it and applied myself and learned trees and woody shrubs. Its still amazing to me how many people have legitimate sized businesses and cant even I'd trees correctly. Not implying anything on here by this just a rant about dumb trees guys haha.

I didn't want to guess. Heart wood looks like cherry, but the bark doesn't.
Maybe some sort of Gum???

I also guess apple. I think the bark looks too smooth for Bradford pear. That being said, I haven't cut a ton of them.

Hmm...I can see where apple may be a strong possibility.
I need to split or noodle some to get a better look at the grain and sniff it better!
