Shagbark is supposedly pretty good...the others I've heard are less than desirable.

Shag hickory nut meats are good but generally breaking the shells involves muscle and a hammer, very tough shells.

I’ve never used it for smoking but it makes excellent, high heat firewood.

I've used a bunch of pignut for smoking meats and in the firewood pile and it is just fine for both.

Tough to tell but looks almost like a hickory or walnut from the bark.

Thats what I thought also. The one on top away from the camera looks like walnut or has iron in it

I would say that it is all white oak. The dark stain on the one log is probably mildew. If you look at all of the ends you will see it has that same dark shade throughout just not as dark. I have had wood do that when cut at certain times of the year on oaks and other species.

Not sure , maybe hickory or walnut maybe a maple (silver). Oak usually absorbs all the moisture and starts to rot shortly . Cut and tell us what it smells like , as stated earlier. Its definitely firewood for heat .

I’ve seen cut off oak tops 35-40 years old from prior logging out in the woods petrified still intact. Stuff lasts a long time in the right conditions.

I agree oak is very hard , but it love to absorb moisture

If he cuts some and splits it , white oak should be stringy if i remember correctly

What wood is this? I’m thinking white oak? It’s HEAVY compared to the ash I’m used to.

It came from a city of 50,000 ppl. They are taking a lot of trees down because emerald ash bore. And once a tree gets byond 20” diameter they usually will cut it down because the roots start living the sidewalk. So if they whole block is ash except one or two. They will bring them down also and clean the whole block.
