Does anyone know if Black Cherry smells good when dried and burned? I think I may have 2 different kinds of black cherry. One with a greenish tinted bark, and one with the traditional black cherry bark.

TY Kevin. I am familiar with the traditional swamp cherry. Smells good when burning.
First time I actually came across this Black Cherry.
The Black Cherry seems to have straight grained meaty wood, vs. The swamp cherry that doesn't seem to have any straight grain. It's more meaty. Tougher to split.
Wood is a bit more orangy red inside.
Black Cherry seems light colored inside, but straight grained.

I smoked some ducks and turkey with cherry and thought it was too strong. I may have just gotten too much smoke or left them on the smoke too long.
I much prefer Hickory or just Oak.

Swamp cherry, wild cherry, black cherry...same tree.
There is a birch tree that’s similar, nicknamed a cherry birch. That might be what your lighter stuff is. Black cherry is definitely orange inside and gets darker as it dries

If the cherry was green it can be pretty strong

I'll grab some photos of my swamp cherry. Different bark and different heart wood.

If there was bark on the cherry it will give the meat a bitter undesirable taste. More so when green, but even seasoned. Fresh center cut cherry and little hickory on the other hand is my favorite smokin combo. It is still strong, but has that sweet cherry taste like your smelling when it is split. Without the bitter undesirable flavor the bark gives.

Cool. I will put some aside that have no bark on them. I've cut about 3 cord so far of all black cherry.

Weird. The pics I posted are definitely 2 different types of cherry trees. Pics aren't doing it any justice.
