The first automatic I drove was the first day of drivers education. I got in to drive and coach Vroman got in the passenger seat. I said "how the hell do I drive this thing". He shook his head and laughed.

I did not say hate but heck who knows some do not see humor
That was a very clapped out 96 or 97 7.3 powerstroke that needed more work than I was told and I traded it and pretty much broke even and also gained some fun and knowledge along the way.
That's what everyone tells me... I've never gotten fully comfortable with manuals, only ever drove our 1995 Toyota pickup in the yard, although the DX series deutz tractors have somewhat similar setups and I've gotten comfortable with those.
I know what a manual trans is, lol.
My Chevy has definitely been reliable for what it is. And actually I did get to drive the Ford twice if that counts
