So back in my early 20's, I used to deride saws like the Stihl 036 as "baby" saws, and still if I had to go to only 1 saw in the quiver, it would be a hybrid 044.
But back about 15 years ago, I bought a 5100S. It was so inexpensive and performed well above its size class. It sports an 18" bar and square ground full comp 3/8" Oregon chain. I've always loved that little saw for the little jobs.
About a year later, my mom was wanting a saw, so I grabbed a Makita 401 for her. Great little saw, 8.8lb, 2.3hp, vertically split magnesium case. She didn't use it much, but my sister ended up taking it eventually to complement her 044. She's loved that little saw. It made an appearance this summer in my garage to replace a fuel line, only work it's ever needed.
Which brings me to now. My daughter, Sawyer, was born just short of 2 months ago. Being that we live in the sticks, burn firewood, and I do the odd tree job when I'm not augered into fire season, I'm hoping she'll enjoy running saws as well. Since Makita is discontinuing their gas lineup, I figured I may as well grab a 4300 now and let it sit without firing it up until she's strong enough to start it herself, then if she wants to, she can help her mom and dad get firewood. (Her mom is getting to be a fair hand at falling, she double cuts trees with her bigger cordless Makita)
Not pictured: the 4300, it's under the Christmas tree.
Also, no need to lecture me about storing a saw long term, not my first rodeo.
