Does anyone have experience with the kit from Saw Salvage AKA The Duke?
I have not gotten that one, but I did get a Duke's nikasil piston and cylinder kit for a Husky 576 and it worked great! Its been on the saw for a year now with no issues.

Thanks Chris - for now we are going to let the plastic chain brake spring cover and the spike hold that piece in place.

I have the parts on order (Saw Salvage AKA The Duke). Thanks for your input.

The owner of the 362 bought a 661 when this one went down so the 362 will only see limited service as they move ahead.

Pretty large jump in size for the usage, ether one is overkill or the other was undersized

He gets a lot of big logs from a local tree service guy, the 362 was really undersize for many of those. He's running an OWB year round for domestic hot water in 2 homes, a hot tub, and a heated pool (he said the pool was 90° F this week, night time lows have been in the 40's for about 3 weeks) so they go though a lot of wood. For summertime operations soft maple, cotton wood, etc. are used and many of those grow pretty large around here.

Thanks Steve, Chris also offered one...for now we decided to use the Duke's kit and leave the crankcase as is.

362 is back together with the Duke's kit. I think is starts and runs O.K. but I'd like to try it a few more times before I send it on down the road.

I also was able to put the finishing touches on the 07 thanks to Jay Hansen. It now features both air filters as it should, and the linkage between the air vane and the choke works as it should.

Looks good and I’m glad it will be in a good home, from what I researched this 07 was an early one because it didn’t have Stihl on the rewind and it’s also odd because the plastic cover is all intact with I hear is very rare. They came with plastic covers and metal both for some reason on the 07 and later 07s. Changed the oil pump plate on the newer ones also.

So a pawn shop has a nice low miles MS-251 for $229.00, I'm sure they would go lower on it. It is not the tool-less tensioner/spring starter type. Just examining it, it looks like a decent little saw. Are these any good? Or is the older MS-250 (which I have) still better?

I agree, not worth the price. They are $399 brand new, bonus that that one does not have the tool-less tensioner easy start. If you are really wanting a saw that size, maybe offer $100 and haggle up to $150. I guess it all depends on what you are wanting to use it for? Tree limbing, firewood cutting, chasing neighbor kids who are ding-dong ditching you??

This saw does claim to be a "wood boss", "The MS 251 WOOD BOSS® is perfect for felling small trees, pruning and thinning, and cutting firewood simply and efficiently." It will cut firewood, but I think they are thinking for camp fires, not necessarily cordage. It can be used for larger firewood cutting, but it will take you a lot longer than using a larger saw with more horsepower. - Again, it all depends on what you are wanting to use it for.

I don't think you will see an upgrade from your MS 250.

They are smoother because they have spring av, roughly same power as the 250. If it’s like new the 229 isn’t that far off but opinions will vary. 399 plus taxes new so 170$ less than a new one, if it’s nice it’s worth close to that. Not many nice running saws are able to be had for 150 anymore with way prices are. Stihl increased 100$ last year and husky did about the same. Stihl has another one on the way in July partly due to terrifs and the unknown increase in production. Companies aren’t going to eat it so we get too.

If depends on what metric you use to determine what's better.

A 251 is smoother, it's burns less fuel and filters air 10x better. The power is very similar.

Some guys I know buy 250s and 251s for the ground guys that work for them in the tree business, if those saws make it a season they paid for themselves 100x over, and they usually die from being smashed, ran over etc.

If your intention is to use it for what it was meant to be used for they are fine. If you get it for 200 bucks and keep it in it's parameters I don't think you'll feel like you got cheated.

Do you actually cut a lot of wood or just play chainsaws ?

One of my coworkers bought a ms 250 to replace his craftsman saw “poulan built with no av” when he built his shack. That little 250 four sided all the logs for his hunting shack and cleared the land it sits on. After this he’s used it to cut his wood for the shack and his garage stove at home. The saw owes him absolutely nothing and is still going, the 45-50cc homeowner saws will do far more than people realize. Patience and maintenance helps I know guys with pro saws that didn’t make it s couple years because they were forced through the cut dull ect. All what you want and how fast you have to cut the pile but a 250/251 will heat a persons house for many years if taken care of. The guys shack isn’t huge but a 24x36 shack is still a bit of cutting when your squaring off all the logs 4 sides to make it with a chainsaw mill.

My 88 year old grandfather still runs a pair of 170’s felling trees, cutting firewood and milling logs into posts and beams for the barn.
So I have no doubt a 250 would hold up to cutting firewood for the home, hell my 271 was my only saw when I started doing wood on a big(ish) scale for 2 years. This was after 8 ish years of already cutting for 2 homes and a maple syrup evaporator.

Outside of tearing them down I never understood why people hate clamshells. I know a meathead that cut MOUNTAINS of firewood with an ms 390 and a 16" bar.

The internet...I swear...

I do cut a fair amount of wood, but it's just an excuse to play with saws. Truth be told, my actual needs could be met with just my Echo CS-400, but what fun is just having one saw? If the 251 is still there when I bail out a layaway next week I may see if I can get a deal on it. Our state government uses MS-250's pretty much exclusively, and those guys are not kind to their equipment.
