Hi all!
Clarifying question for folks:

Is it ok to just stock white 462c filters for all 46s (Keep It Simple Stupid) or is there a reason to run different filters / adding the tan pre-filters / foam inner-filters on the older models?

I recently requested a spare filter set for every Stihl saw in our city fleet. They ordered the white filter for 462c, and the black with/without pre-filter for 460&461 since that is what the parts diagram showed. Now I see a foam inner-filter is also a thing...

Whoops yep just a modern-looking white filter for a 461 vs a black filter/prefilter combo on the 460 that threw me off. Any reason not to use the modern-looking white ones in future orders?

I do cut a fair amount of wood, but it's just an excuse to play with saws. Truth be told, my actual needs could be met with just my Echo CS-400, but what fun is just having one saw? If the 251 is still there when I bail out a layaway next week I may see if I can get a deal on it. Our state government uses MS-250's pretty much exclusively, and those guys are not kind to their equipment.

Did you buy it ?

I believed the black ones are no longer available. I was told Stihl change them to white color to help users know how dirty their air filter is.

The lumberyard down the street from my building manufactures surveying stakes of all sorts. Most start with an 8' unit of 2x3, 2x4, or 2x6 lumber which the cut in half and proceed to make 2' and 4' stakes. They have an 881 equipped with a 60" bar for the first operation, and I sharpen chains and maintain their saw as needed. Today, it needed a new starter rope.

So, what's the deal with the MS-271? I looked at one in a pawn shop today. It was pretty high mileage and they would have to drop the price a huge amount to get me to bite, but it looks like it would be a decent saw. The fact that it had so much obvious wear means that somebody was getting good use out of it. I'm well set in 50cc saws with my two Echoes, but if a 271 came about for dirt cheap I might pick it up.

I have nothing bad to say about 271’s. I bought mine new 13 years ago as my first brand new saw. Probably have in the neighbourhood of 300 cord on it, only had to replace wear parts on it.
That being said I always look after my stuff religiously. Being hard on equipment costs too much.

So, what's the deal with the MS-271?
I have two 271s (I am second owner on both), both ended up with crud behind and between the chain brake and the case, causing the chain brake to ride the clutch, overheating everything (needle bearing, plastic oiler, plastic case) and ended up with a bunch of melted plastic. I tried dremmeling out what I could, but the chain break never sat right again. I ended up getting a new-used case off of eBay for one saw, have not done the other yet. They are good saws, weight and balance like a 261, but 1.5 hp less. I like them!

Welcome to the new FARM BOOOSSSS! 029! 😆 🤣.
AS OTHERS HAVE STATED, it's a good saw if you take care of it. It's definitely farm/ home owner grade.
