Stihl part number 3005 008 7017 is an 18 inch Light 04 bar, correct? I sold one on Fleabay and the customer claims it is 16 inch. I put a 16 inch bar on my saw and confirmed it is shorter.

According to Ace you are correct, I wonder if he is going to try the return swap - send you back a 16 and said that you sent that to him?

Comes back to an MS-361 type saw, although my ad gives the Stihl part number and states it fits a 025/250.
I have heard of people downsizing bars on a bigger saw, but not putting a .325 bar on a 361. I put a 3/8 chain on my 261 and am trying to figure a way to get .404 on it, but won't even think about putting 3/8p on it.

I have worked on 026s with 3/8 chain and a 290 with .325.

I've got a few days to try 462mtronic and 500i demos from dealer. He thinks the 500i has enough time to have seated the rings but the 462 may need more time. The 046, my daily work saw performed better than both using same bar and chain.
Only two difference iare my saws all have holes drilled in their muffler covers along with carb adjustments. My saws have 8 tooth, demos have 7.
It's been 10 or more years since I've had a new saw, a 461. It seems like the rings seated after 5 or 6 tanks. I did my simple muffler modification at that point and had the saw performing like I'm used to.Fast acceleration for limbing White Pine, Spruce, and small hardwood limbs as well as the nice low end for felling and ripping large hardwood limbs.
I've only been able to buck a few logs. In pine they were all close. In black oak and ash the old 046 was much better. I was really disappointed in both demo saws. I tried a fellow loggers 462mtronic a while ago and it seemed much snappier and better on low end torque than this demo.
This is the only 500i I've run, so cannot compare it to another 500.
So I am asking will these saws gain like my 044s, 046s, 440s, 460s, and 461 always have with rings seated and opening up the exhaust? I have a few more days and will get to work them more, and will put an 8 tooth sprocket on.

Both saws should beat an 046, both will gain with a muffler mod ect and they will take 10-12 tanks to come alive.

I really doubt a 462 is going to put away an 046 dependent on bar length. The 046, especially the early ones that came from the factory with the D-shaped combustion chamber and dual port cover from the factory, ran better than the later ones and the MS 460. With a 20-25” bar a 462 should have a chance in a cant. In practical use in the woods the 046 is a better saw.

A 500? Yeah, a 500 should beat one. Fuel injection and more displacement alone are in its favor.

Hold up, that ain't no Dolmar o.O
WOW, someone noticed! 😋

It was a one night stand, literally - though I am hopeful.
Once she started whispering in my ears & giving of heat I didn't even fight the urge and took her out into the night. 😏

Rainy night, that is.
I knew I triggered her right once she began screaming through the night.

Curious when Stihl introduced the Elastostart handles? Google says 2000 but I believe it’s a bit earlier based on new saws I’ve seen from the mid 90s. All black must be the first run of the handles?

Also, is there someone on here that can look up a serial number?

O.K., I now know that the 041 FB parts will not work in the 040 so I am looking for the starter guts for an 040, clutch cover for an 041 FB, and clutch cover for an 07. The Stihl section in the display is making some huge progress in a weeks time.
