Not a stihl guy…all I did was pull the screws out of these mounts to remove the handle and put them back. Now one mount is proud and one sunk. Proud is gonna get chewed by the chain. It was late, probably missed something dumb, but pointers appreciated.

Swap them? But seriously, that looks to be a 180-250 or something of the sort. If the av mounts are not in the right grooves the covers will do that.

The rubber bushing is in the wrong spot....take the plastic insert back out, and push the rubber in further.

I got the oil pump mount screw drilled out and a Heli-coil set in with some lock tight.
The only thing is about this MS440 is that if it was a jacket it would be considered "thread bare " . It really does have some thin spots on it.20230411_212003.jpg

I am looking for some presets for Stihl 1/4 Pico chain, .043 gauge. I called the best local Stihl dealer and they say they are not allowed to repair a chain...

TIA

I’m pretty sure I have some, thought all Stihl 1/4” was .043 but not 100%. Maybe they did make a .050 driver also but I’ll see what I have. I read somewhere once that on 3/8” regular Stihl chain all the drivers started out .063 and they got taken down to the .058 or .050 so the top part was the same on all them making the preset work on all too. Never asked my buddy at Stihl about this but maybe I should to see if that’s how it is.

Here's a question I never thought about before... maybe someone knows the answer.

Here's the control lever from my 046. Simple, plain, straightforward.

Here's the control lever from my 034. A little more design oddness and flair.

Stihl 034 Choke Lever.jpg

Why did Stihl put that plastic guide on the left side, and what's up with notches on it? I've never noticed or used them in any way, ever in almost 30 years. Yet Stihl put them there for.... some reason? Anyone know why?

Edit: Yes I realize the 046 has little notches, and yes I realize they line up with the positions. But they serve no purpose that I can tell. The lever is a terrific "by feel design" and doesn't need visual notches.

I could be wrong, but I believe the notches are there in case the ink wears out. Gives a new user a reference that there are 4 notches if the ink is worn.

Good thinking. That makes sense.. Sometimes I forget what production saws look like vs the TLC I give my saws.

The detent on the lever is so strong I've done it by feel since forever. All the way down to start, flick up and squeeze the throttle. It's not rocket science when even a club fisted hammer donkey like me can do it. The notches just seem silly when you never even need to look at them.

20230418_152928.jpgthe 046 I recently restored to functional already had a hair line crack near the back ,so one of the site sponsors tank protectors was in order.
20230418_152938.jpgi was also able to get new oil and fuel caps from my local saw shop.

So after bolting down the cylinder for the ruff ms440 I did a vac/pressure test and it failed so pulling a Bob Johnson trick I blew a big puff of smoke through the impulse port with the blocks in place. It came out under the side of the pto bearing, but not the seal part?

Apparently sometime in the past someone made a nurled steel ring for the case and it was alittle off? Which could explain the rtv under the oil pump!
So now I guess I need a new case or half?

Not sure why anyone would try a knurled sleeve on an air tight situation. I realize they were trying to keep it from spinning but a light press or tight in bore with loctite sleeve retainer would probably have worked.

Strangely enough I was talking about this to the local shop owner and he said that it could be oem?

Yup, time for some experience.
@drf256 , do some 044/440 cases have a pressed it ring around the pto bearing?
Find it hard to believe it would be factory with knurled and rtv on it but maybe, smooth press fit sleve for bearing with some kind of sealer I could see as oem.

I think so.

@Canadian farm boy told me there was a sleeve in every case. I didn’t even notice it until he said so.

It’s thin and not very noticeable. I’d say around 10-20 thou in thickness. It’s not that thick knurled one you have there.

Id get a new case if I were you. That’s a lot of work for a questionable end result. Lots of 460 cases around, and I think they make AM now. The AM cases ain’t that bad. I wouldn’t trust the moving parts, but the cases seem ok.

I am still trying to find 1/4 .043 presets or a part number so I can look for some. Any ideas?
