If anyone has an 066 or 660 cylinder laying around and have the time could you grab the bolt pattern dimensions for me? I don't feel like buying one just to get the dementions. I guess I could always just buy the base gasket to get the dimensions.

Thanks in advance.

Old Stihl saws on the workbench this week. I am in need of a fuel cap & gasket for the 042 as this one is cracked and leaks badly. Any suggestions for where to find a cap (even a part number) would be most appreciated.

The 056 is done and ready to cut wood. This customer says they have a few trees down and need the saws to get them cleaned up. I am going to try and convince them to sell these saws to me when they are done with the job. They would go well in my display.

P/n for the cap is 1117 350 0500, my Stihl shop had one on hand. 066, 038, 028, etc should all work on it.

The 042 and 048 were not in the line up very long for some reason .Rumor has it it developed case leaks because of design .The early units used slot headed screws later changed to Torx head .Fact it was decades ago the 048 was the first Stihl I ever owned bought with a spun main bearing .I used to old tool maker trick of raising the metal in the pocket and using Loctite "press fit " compound to anchor it .That was long enough ago you could still find parts which are rare these days .

Dan - I don't think the cap on this 042 is the same as the 028 (just happen to have an 028 in as well at the moment). 028 cap is in the tank, 042 cap is on the tank.

This is the cap from the 042

Hmm, my ipl gives me the one p/n, I might've been mistaken on the 028 part. I know I was running new caps on my 048 that I bought from my local Stihl shop, but the part number is long gone. You can't really see it clearly, but the ipl I have says 1117 350 0500 is the correct #.

I know this is a Mac thread but will add an 048 has plenty of power to run a 32"bar .At the time it was the highest H.P. per weight ratio on the market .Urban legion has it this model was specically designed for the US Forestry Service but I doubt that to be factual .BTW I have two .

IMO the 038 mag is a cut above an 042 .I might mention the version of the 042 I have has an SEM ignition system which is an advancing coil .Problem was mine did not advance .Could not run over about half throttle .I found another coil and that fixed it . Took me a while to figure that out .

I might add I have the theory of operation about that coil .It's a couple of pages long.To try to explain it would take me a month of Sunday's .As far as replacement I've seen a lot of Bosc replacements but no SEM and I think they take a different flywheel .
