Hey Fellows! What kind of ignition does the Stihl 044 have in it? It’s a 10mm 044 and screams until it gets hot. Then it quits. It’s cooling down now. I’m hoping it’s one of the Bosch ignition systems. I got one of them repaired on the shelf. image.jpg

This one came from Mark & Ron Hosky, looked like it had been stored in a barn for a while. I was just planning on cleaning it up and putting it in the display but given the internal condition and the fact that it had spark I had to make it run. Starts, runs, idles, oils, does everything it is supposed to do.

If you've never been inside of one, there is an air vane governor connected to the choke, if the engine overspeeds the choke is pulled closed. Simple and straightforward.

You'll still see that engine running on TS350 chop saws to this day -- which are also good sources for SEM ignitions when the top ends finally bite the dust, literally.

I felt a little bit stupid after asking for help with this. I mean I have a whole shelf of these saws. It’s just been awhile since I spent any time with them. Maybe time to spend some time with them. image.jpg

Not stupid. But it does get worse. Wait'll you start finding your keys in the refrigerator or trying to turn on the TV with your phone.

Regarding your 044 coil, the 1300 is about the most bullet proof coil out there and rarely fails..., at least in my experience. I've never run across a bad one. That said, I certainly can't say the same about what may be connected to one -- starting with the spark plug.

And if you are indeed experiencing (and have tested for) a no spark condition with the saw hot, I'd work backward from the plug, boot/spring lead, the entire length of the plug wire, the high tension connection at the module (including the pin), and the entire length and both end connections of the kill wire.

There is a much higher probability of a heat related short or open somewhere else in the ignition system than a bad module, especially a 400-1300 if the ignition system is the actual cause of the saw becoming difficult when hot. If all else looks good, there's probably a 1300 on at least two or three of those other saws on the shelf. Swap one in and see if that remedies the problem.

There could also be coincidental causes. A plugged tank vent comes to mind.

Good luck with it.

I've had one Stihl coil fail and that was on an 042 .SEM advancing coil (rare ) that would not advance and thus ran under speed .A guy on a site I no longer visit had one but didn't have any idea what it was for and I identified it for him .He put it on flea bay and it cost me a whole 5 bucks to buy it .Right place right time . That happens some times .

The 08 was one of the longest running designs in Stihl’s history, they ran them on post hole augers, sprayers, pumps, brush cutters even made and outboard lower unit for them. Don’t know if they ever got the boat motor attachment in production. I have several and they seem nearly impossible to kill as a chainsaw, only thing that does them in is the concrete dust. I have a few old standard 08 saws with the white push to kill button and older yet choke to kill.

few of them scattered in my older collection. Actually the one top handle style is an s-10 with the case muffler. The other one is an 08 stamped steel muffler and a a-10 rear handle. Along with other old saws like an 030av, 031av, 075, 090, and 045.

I've got so many Stihls I've almost lost count. Just picked up two more MS200T's and my 4th 064 this week......

And I'm almost done with this old girl after over a year of searching for and collecting parts from all over the orb.......just gotta build a custom-from-scratch muffler for her and then give her a test run....

Modded oil pump, base deleted, sitting at around .024 TDC.
