I still have this MS261C on the bench, it has several issues including no spark and needs a fuel tank. I can get a good used tank off eBay for a reasonable price, but I understand the no spark issue could be the solenoid (in the carburetor?) rather than the coil itself. Does anyone know how I might go about testing the pieces without the Stihl specialized equipment?

Thanks in advance.

The solenoid should not affect spark. The harness to it and the associated micro switch could if shorted.

You would generally test an M-tronic control module for spark just like any coil. Pop the M-tronic connector loose from the module, short the plug to the cylinder and spin the flywheel. No spark, bad module 99% of the time. That said, I've found two instances of the plug lead being rubbed through in the case channel on 661s which created a direct short to the case. You may want to check that 261 for a similar condition.

The sticker on the rear handle foot pad may indicate the version of M-tronic which will in turn affect the version of module recommended as a replacement (if necessary). If you don't have a MS261 C-M IPL I can hook you up. I don't remember if I sent one. I can also forward some other random M-tronic material that may come in handy down the road.

That saw will have a V1.0 or V1.1 control module and probably a black solenoid. Some may suggest an upgrade to V3.0 if a new control module is required. While technically possible, it's not at all feasible. Stick with the same module and drop another black solenoid in the carb if your dealer still stocks them. They still work and cost half as much as the updated white or green ones the last time I priced them. They'll also last longer when used with the finer micron orange fuel filter.

I forwarded some material that may assist.

The Bailey's listing is incorrect according to my documentation. 0000-642-1234 is an 8T mini spline rim. 1236 is a 7T.

They're also only $7.50 at a Stihl dealer.

If a penny fits inside the rim, an Oregon 11892 is a replacement. Frawley's (Loggerchain.com) has those. They're also a great resource for many items and helpful with such issues if you haven't spoken with them before. Fair prices and fast shipping has also been my experience with them.

Thanks Poge, I wouldn't have thought of them even though I buy several rolls of chain form them each year and find their customer service to be excellent.

Frawley's doesn't have the Stihl Mini Spline sprockets avaialable, he says they are only available through your local Stihl dealer.

I did order some loops of 3/8 LP skip chain like they use on many of the Wild Thing type saws. He tells me you cannot find the 3/8 LP skip in a roll, the chains that come on the Poulan saws are something they special order in bulk and are made at the factory.

Since this is the Stihl thread...

Started out like this

To this

There were a few leftover pieces but since it starts, runs, and cuts as it should I guess they are not important.

LOL - Congratulations. Was it not an M-tronic saw?

It is M-tronic, the coil was fine. I don't know why they could not get it to run or why they started taking it apart. Based on their informaiton I bought the coil and didn't need it. I only needed the choke lever off the "filter base" but had to buy the whole assembly to get the lever.

Glad it worked out so easily and you didn't need to dive too far into the M-tronic aspect -- though the 261 is probably the most stable and easiest to learn on of the M-tronic saws. Quite formidable little machines whether M-tronic or conventionally carb'd (which are actually still available).

I'm currently rebuilding an early predecessor 024 in remarkably great condition under the grime. Even the tiny f/w side oil seal is still good!

I saw a never fueled Stihl 046 for sale. I am not too familiar with the different models, so I assume it's a 'standard' 046.
What would be an estimated value?

Ok thanks. Only thing I noticed was the 'Made in Germany' sticker on the front is just an empty sticker. And there is no sticker on the inside of the brake handle. The rest looks factory to me.
