A majority of what Stihl chain I have was salvaged from my buddy's bucket truck .As good as it is it won't stand up to wire fences and rocks .I've got the presets and ties to repair it .About once every two or so years I'll dig out the spinner and repair, lengthen ,shorten or what ever it takes .As it is don't have much .325 chain so I have to buy it .As far as saws of nearly every size ,got plenty of them .

I had an 034 I put an 036 top end on with a Meteor piston .I traded it for a Mac 805 . That 034/036 last I heard after at least 10 - 12 years is still earning it's keep .I landed an 034 super which when I get the time will get the "treatment " .Nice mid sized saws .The 034 super for those who do not know is in effect an 036 .

I've got an 034 super,028 and and 024 .To be honest other than the 024 it's been so long since I've even looked at the other two I have no idea what size chains they use . The 028 for example is not a bad saw I just don't use it often .Which is kind of a problem when you have a lot of saws .Some just never make it off the shelf because you have favorites .Then you get a notion to run one of the shelf queens and you end up rebuilding the carb because it's sat so long .As I type I have a pole saw I'll probably need to do exactly that .I need the SOB but it won't start .It's always something .

Took an 024 in partial trade. Scored top end.

Gave it ‘The Dip’.

Can I slap a MS260 top end on there or will there be a problem with the cover plastic?

Unless it’s a 024 super the 026 is a longer stroke, the 024 is one stroke length then the super is same bore and longer stroke, finally the 026 is a bored out 024 super basically.

A decomp isn't necessary for an 024 or an 026. The air filter and tank vent would also be problematic -- at least for the MS air box cover. Plus, the flat top look is way cooler imho. LOL

The part number for the 024S/026 crank is 1121-030-0405. There's a T.I. with a serial number break point for the 024/024S crank change, but it preceeds any digital documentation I have. Maybe someone else knows.

026 is a 44mm slug. 260 is 44.7mm. And all the other stuff mentioned.

MS260s had both top ends. So did later 026s. I actually have two 44.7 026s, though the 44.7mm top end doesn't show up in an 026 IPL. Neither does a WT22 carb which was used on lots of em -- including the two I have.

And a little searching came up with a 32mm stroke for the 024S and 30mm for the non-super. Easy enough to measure.

Standard 024’s usually had the small air filter and shorter air filter cover where most if not all 024 supers had the set up like an 026z

The part no. was not changed. The slot for the woodruff key and the key itself got changed. Therefore the crankshaft got more strengh. The new key has rounded edges as well as the slot for it. A sharp edged key must not be installed in a crankshaft with rounded edges otherwise there is a risk of the crankshaft breaking.

I didn't say the part number changed. I simply provided the long stroke crankshaft part number for convenient reference. The short stroke cranks are 1121-030-0400.

The same 1120-036-8500 2 x 3.7mm key is listed for every saw model that ever used a key. There are only a few exceptions where part number 9482-435-0030 is referenced for the same 2 x 3.7mm key -- later to be changed somewhere around 1988 to the 1120-036-8500 number for those few models only -- generally the 031, 051, 075 era saws. The cranks for those particular key number changes for those particular saws do not reflect correcponding part number changes to indicate any design changes relative to different key shapes.

I'd be interested in any documentation relative to the above for my archives.
