Just a heads up from what little I know. 038 mag somebody had tried to use much too long of screws to hold on the lower handle and they vibrated / bored right into the crankcase ,leaked from the oil tank .J B weld didn't fix it .Split the cases cleaned them up , ground the E-coat off .Took it to work and turned it over to my bud who is a cracker jack heli arc welder .It took him about 4 tries to find the correct filler rod .

Whatever alloy Stihl uses it's not common and not everybody can weld it .I got this one repaired but it wasn't a walk in the park

Wasn’t just a standard magnesium rod? Asking because I haven’t welded it yet, wonder if an old sacrificial saw case might make good chunks of filler

As I said I have no idea exactly what the alloy is .That said I doubt it's pure mag .I have no idea but it might be a thing Google could find out .
I'm a pretty fair welder on metals like steel ,cast iron etc .However when it comes to alloys of aluminum, mag etc. I'm in the lost lane .-,it's way above my pay grade .

Is there a difference between the heated and non in that side of the case?

Just the serial number -- which Stihl may want from the busted one before replacing it. Think I'd run it through my dealer under the circumstances anyway now..., just because.

Well, I think I'm going to start looking for a new cylinder for that 661 aswell.

Today I sat down and widened the ports while the crank case was at the dealer. The more I started looking at that chamfer on top of exhaust the more I don't like it.

I cleaned the cylinder and really got a clear picture of it.

I think someone was chasing some chipping and raised the exhaust which is probaly why the saw started so easy and felt like a dog. I've ran stock 661s before and this one didn't really remind me of them.

Here's a photo of before I had messed with it.

Well I sent an offer on used oem cylinder that looks pretty used but ports don't look tampered with.

I have a question. I saw the newer 661 cylinder castings were supposedly preferred. But I couldn't find a particular reason why. Can someone fill me in on it?

That sucks that you had to give close to new price for a used saw

Yeah this is where I'm at now.

$875 including refund.
$130 coil kit and seal kit dealer parts valued me.
$240-260 in crankcase half.
$115 used cylinder. Soon to be shipped.

If it weren't fun....

But I think I woulda seriously thought about chasing down a complete refund on that one. And the serial number may still come back with baggage attached..., if it actually has one.

Bummer, man. I feel bad for ya.

I got ahold of Stihl Canada today. They had the saw registered and it was sold in 2018. North America Stihl and Canada Stihl don't have unified systems i guess...

But I also got to talking to someone it is still one of the earlier batches. As it was after the stop sale but before they switched to Brazil cylinder manufacturing. Also it has a 2 peice crank where the new ones have a 3 peice. I don't know how much that matters though.

Well my old man always put it. You took a bite out of the apple and you found a worm. Might as well finish it.

I'm going to put it back together with a used ebay cylinder of the same generation that looked better along with a oem piston. I'll leave the piston I got from Dave in the tool box.

Let's run it till it breaks if and when. Then I'll just walk in buy a standard 661 then swap over the winter package and oiler. Or I'll just part out the good parts and buy a 395.

Besides where I tore into the saw a full refund would probably be difficult. Granted I would have not seen the problems if I didn't.

Got the OEM fuel line and put an o-ring on the oil cap , all the leaks seem to be solved at this point.
Have her properly attired now with bucking spikes and a bar. All I have left is to do the 5 tanks of break in I like to get in for the rings and cylinder.

Hey folks. I've got a little 009 here that I'm thinking about fixing up but I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time. What would you folks say a low hours 009 in mostly original condition aside from a new oem piston is worth?

Actually pretty cool little reed saws. But whatever time you're willing to put into it is about all one is worth. The good news is there are plenty of parts donors for those saws. With the exception of top ends, 009 ~ 012 saws share lots of parts. Here's a quick and dirty Clymer rundown. I also have the Stihl IPLs and Shop Manuals if you get serious.

And if you are real serious I have a mostly complete 011 I believe that would be a good donor. Can send you pics sometime if needed. Thx

I worked on a three 011's in the past 3 months, one was in pretty bad shape when the reeds dropped into the crankcase at full throttle. I used a Golf piston and was able to get everything it needed for under $100.

The other one was in need of crankshaft seals. First one was a top handle second one a rear handle.

They were not too bad to work on and I don't have to charge much as my time is mostly my own.

One kind soul sent me a box of parts to use as needed and I was able to complete a third saw to put on display in my museum.

Everything is original and seems to be in great shape! Carb is currently set aside. I found some fair scoring on the exhaust side of piston though. Even the air filter looks fairly new. I've got the trigger, interlock and spring set aside but I'm not sure where the handle molding went to.
