And while we're on the subject of the MaxFlo setup, even the 1/4 turn version designed for the 661 proves itself superior to the stock HD filter day in and day out. Costs another $20 over the 461 version because it's prettier and a cooler match for the saw, but still uses the same filtration innards. Maintains superior flow between cleanings many times over compared to the HD. Not sure why anyone who runs a 661 all day wouldn't use one.

And you don't need a dull chain to generate fines, though it certainly helps! Watch all the way to the end.

I agree. Maybe on the 661 replacement they will have air injection like the 462? Would be a nice solution to this problem.

I run a max-flow on my 088, with a modified oem air filter cover.
There are a great response company, I contacted them and go almost an immediate response. The air filter cover is pretty hideous for most of the kits though, and the plastic feels cheap.

That cream colored mount looks like the same one in the ms441?

So I'll post everything later tonight. But damn this is so much better. I wish I had done it sooner. I've tried the 36", 28" and 20" and I don't see any negative effects from the kit.

So my 10mm 044 has a little chain damage to the plastic tank . I didnt want to change it for an aftermarket one or the unobtanuim oem nos tank . I downloaded an ipl for an ms440 along with a 044 and noticed that the 440 has a aluminium tank sheild that screws to the bottom of the tank handle, found a cheap used one on line and will give it a try.20210319_181914.jpg 20210319_181917.jpg
A smear of the gorilla glue should do the trick, its pretty impressive when dry.20210319_182314.jpg

Customchainsawparts sells a skid plate that protects the entire underside of the saw. Evidently only works with half-wrap handlebars as it somehow utilizes the handle mounting arrangement as an attachment point.

I have one on my 088, but it doesn't have corners around the tank (belly protective only) which is good but the damage is on that corner of the tank from chains blowing off on the 044.
I did get the beefy clutch cover which has any future chain throws, but just figured a little prevention is a good idea.
I'll have to get the 088 out for some fun soon since I'm mentioning it so much , it's quite snappy. I've just been trying to get the break in set on the 044 and the SP81 next.

That 044 looks to be coming around nicely. I have another one in the wings myself that was a classroom instructional saw for a high school shop class. Very well maintained and very few actual work hours on it. Of all things, it got straight-gassed. (Substitute teacher that day?) Brought it to me for an estimate but they decided to spend the extra money for a Husky 562 instead. I got it cheap along with a 28" b/c.

I have a soft spot for 044's as mine was the second saw I ever built. First was an 026. Still have it, too.

Instead of building another 660 clone for a double ended mill.
(which I was going to do this one with all oem internals and jug.)
I bought a 661 artic wrap. It was about $300 more than I wanted to spend. But I can finally say I have a heated handle saw and I guess I've diversified my collection even more now.

Thats pretty AWESOME, hopefully you can salvage the cylinder,
I really can't say enough good about the meteor piston kit I purchased for my 044 and 038 magnum. Thay really do look and feel oem.

Never understood the MS441. Decent enough saw with smooth a/v, but a few more ounces and another 100 bux and you could have a MS461. My "go to" Stihl dealer never even stocked em. Sold exactly one to a guy who just had to have one. He'll stock and keep selling 461's as long as he can get them and already has a couple stashed away for a rainy day. Also has a few NIB 200T's in storage.

Biggest selling point of the MS441 (if you could call it that) was it came in an M-Tronic version.

I definitely think that the 441 was either too advanced for the saws in the competitive field or just like Poge said move of a novelty,
I do see alot of design features of the new saws that were aready taking shape with the 441 , it is a very nice saw to cut with but if I had a shop I wouldn't sell them either if I had to work on them.

Then there's that..., LOL.

I really don't mind working on them. There's that little extra gratification factor when you get one back together and don't have any extra mystery parts still laying on the bench.

Don't get me wrong. They're screamin' ass saws and comfortable to run. I just don't understand why someone would buy one over a MS461 unless they just badly wanted a 70cc Stihl M-tronic saw.

So I am building a scrap yard 066 round top and came into an early 56mm big bore cylinder, does the 56mm 661 piston get used in that,or is it a different pin/skirt height?
