Hi folks,

I am in the process of attempting to put a very low hours roasted 025 together for a buddy. First time working on any clamshell design. I have another 025 with a clean engine but busted up externals. Is it possible to swap the engine over without dropping the engine pan. All I see are four bolts that hold the pan and engine to the case. I am not looking for more work if that pan will stay put after the bolts are out. Swap, drop and get it running?

Thanks for the help.

Swap and drop. No bar stud to remove like the 1127 series and the pan should be well sealed with Dirko HT or equivalent. It will easily come out of the housing after removing the four bolts. The intake boot and bulkhead should be attached to the cylinder when re-installing if you removed them before pulling the shortblock.

Thanks Poge. Worked out fine. Friend just stopped over and we gave it a rip. Cleaned up and runs well. Made his day.

More cleaning. Theres all sorts of crud cooked in all the nooks and crannies inside of this saw. Clutch cover looks like it had chain contact at one time...probably had one let loose. The piston looks pretty good from what I can see of it. Rings look good too.

I cleaned the muffler and got the crud off the outside of it. Cleaned the screens too. What to use to paint the muffler with? Any suggestions? Just to keep it from rusting out.

Anyone ever seen a Stihl 041 with a backward ignition switch? Down is run and I’m assuming it’s also factory looking at tag. Bosch external trigged electronic ignition.

Yep Bosch remote trigger mounted under the left front of the cover. Just sold it to an older gentleman who brought me one to fix but his was super rough and not worth it to fix.

Dumb question, have the 500i's hit the market in the US yet? I pretty much live a few miles away from one of the biggest and well known Stihl dealers up here and I did not see one on the show room. Looks like you gents down under and across the pond have them.

Howdy guy, always great to see those sweet looking Stihls. I’ve been lucky and finally got my wife to break down and let me get a 261cm. Yes, it cost me more on the “honey-do” list than the cost of the saw but what the heck.
I was wondering if anyone had an IPL for this saw since I intend to experiment a bit with some b/c combinations that will scare away my dealer for sure.
Thanks and there sis no better way to cure chainsaw addiction than to buy a new Stihl saw even if you don’t need it!
Take care y’all

Run it with .325 chain. Its the best for that saw and keeps the RPMs in the power band.

Thanks Chevy, already have the .325 RM but wish there was a 0.050 rather than the 0.063.
Any thing I should look for during the calibration period? Haven’t done it yet, since my dealer knows that I’m always at their so called warranty assembly.
Hope someday to have a the lightweight bar on there with a NK chain on her. She’ll be ripping through it with that setup.
Cheers!

Must be the California emissions thing... again.
Good thing it’s delayed, my “honey-do” jar would have a build a new house job in there for sure. Lol

I just got a loop of the new Stihl RS pro .325 chain. Super fast and smooth. It is excellent chain.
Not sure on the calibration process. My saw is a V1. Yours will probably be the newer, newest model. I'd check with the dealer.

I think @ray benson could help you with an IPL and Service manual.

I’m looking for chain like that here in my neck of the woods but no luck. My dealer is more for lawn mowers than chainsaws. Too bad. I’ll ask just for kicks.
Yes I have the V3 version of the M-Tronics. I’m sure that means they fixed ALL the bugs!
Does your dealer know about the Stihl Light 04 bar for the 261cm ? That is the lightweight bar I’m gunning for.
