Spent the morning clearing storm damage and got to use the super 038 with a 28" bar and skip tooth.
One of the Rangers working with me was using a husky 445 ,so I handed the stihl over to him for awhile and thought I might have to wrestle it back from him , needless to say he was very impressed with the 038.20200413_.jpg

I think you'll find it stamped into the top front corner of the PTO side case half.

Than You Pogo . Have read you can Id exact model from the number . Also that you can remove the muffler and see if the cylinder base has a chamfer around the mount to ID a Magnum from the other 056's . Also that the Magnum muffler was ported on the front but also had a port that exited on the PTO side between the clutch cover and carb cover ( more or less ) . SN #120863412

The one I am looking at has a tube type port coming out the side and has port on the front . Was stuck but soaking with a spray of PB Blast turned it loose , not sure if ring is stuck or not but turns over fairly easy with a socket and short ratchet . I am no saw mechanic and am just fiddling with it to see if it's a good enough saw for me to turn over to someone else to fix up for me ,..... or not !

They are actually quite simple to work on. The key to disassembly is removing the top cover/rear handle. (Drain any fuel that may still be in the tank.) Once the top cover is out of the way you'll have unimpaired access for removing the muffler to inspect the piston and measure the cylinder bore to determine what you actually have. The common redneck method for getting a measurement is to stick a straw (or something similar) into the exhaust port against the opposite wall of the cylinder and crank the piston up against it to make a mark. Then measure. Hardly precise, but close enough for the purpose.

Older serial numbers aren't searchable by digital means. The one you provided returns nothing when plugged into Stihl's search engine. The tech notes (along with bore measurements) should be helpful in identifying which saws you have. Serial number break points throughout the IPLs are also helpful in at least getting you in the neighborhood.

I quick browse through the 1115 Tech Notes from the link I posted would indicate that serial number is a relatively late issue number and would be a MagII. A couple other points of possible MagII identification without taking the saw apart would be a dual element air filter and the carb box cover with two notches at the bottom instead of one. There are several other indicators that should be fairly easy to reference if you spend a little time with the tech notes and IPLs. All of the significant differences between previous models and the MagII are explained in detail.

But with all the above considered, any 1115 saw with good spark has the potential to be a bad ass saw. The MagII just happens to be the last and baddest in the series by a fair margin.

I saw all of that as well as the SEM ignition up grade , switch upgrade with protective ear on handle, two screws instead of one for air filter, last version muffler , and a couple of other things I can't call to mind right at the moment . What I could not get straight in my currently overloaded mind is if any of the models overlapped the Mag II and would have also had the upgrades . I figured it was not a regular 056 AV because the tag is totally different on this saw but was the same layout used in either the Super or Mag II .

Have been through the tech notes and will be going thru them again but haven't tackled the IPL's yet .

The MagII is the result of all the upgrades combined with the new engine. Lots of stuff will overlap aside from the main engine components, but many upgrades won't retrofit backward without other associated upgrades already being in place for the older models. Other upgrades were simply implemented in the course of normal service and can randomly appear on any of the models. As you're finding out, there were quite a few changes along the way.

You'll find the IPLs helpful as they have many of the component changes documented along with serial number break points for those changes.

Nope . They are in Tennessee right now and I am at one of the houses in Alabama. No rush . They belong to my son Parker . He just moved in to a house he is renting and his funds are kinda short. He was logging but work has been so short since it rained three or four days a week all winter that he has been doing odd jobs and helping a buddy that does concrete to pay bills . He is working on my dads old Poulan 3400 right at the moment so we will probably start the better of the two 056's when that's done and he catches his funds up .

I am looking for a piston/cylinder kit for on older 017 or a source for a reasonably priced flywheel and coil as all of the 017 kits I have seen say they are for later model saws that require the flywheel and coil. I am trying to help out our city guys with a well worn 017.

Thanks in advance.

Here's my little contribution to the Stihl thread. I started burning wood in my house a while back ago, had to get a chainsaw to get going.

My first purchase was MS 391 and then a little while later I purchased my MS 660 due to the stuff I was getting dropped off.

Then a friend of mine was getting rid of a 038 Super. He brought it to me in pieces. I put it back together and brought it to my saw shop, Hudsons, and they got it squared away. Good running saw after the carb was cleaned and new lines.

My ebay purchase, I picked up a 038 Magnum II. Needs cleaned up and a new pull rope. I dont know if the wire mesh style air filter belongs there, I figured I would ask here before getting an OEM one that isn't the wire one.
