I ain't pulling no factory installed clutch and oil pump just to replace a oil hose that shrunk due to poor material choice and aging.
As long as sufficient oil gets to the bar mine are allowed to leak, although when the leak is so severe that too little oil gets to the bar I will fix it.
I made a clutch tool, and ordered oil pressure hoses and clutch contact plates - my No.1 PS-7900 needs an oil pressure hose replacement, on a couple other saws I want to swap out discolored/burnt clutches (used saw purchases).
I just need to get a starting on overhauls and maintenance.

If you clean the old lines a dab of sealer usually seals them right up. Also the line without a barb if you put a small flat washer behind it to put more pressure on it they usually never leak
I used a little bit of sealer last time, but not the washer trick. I will keep that in mind. Thank you!

I hear you. I'm just tired of it always leaking the oil out.

Hi folks,
it seems, we can't always talk big saws in this thread (although Wilhelm would appreciate it) so here are some
pics of smaller saws I did in the last few months:

A PS-39 last November. It was offered defective in a village only a few minutes ride away from where I live so I just went there and fetched it.
Main problem was a broken clutch which ad caused damaged to the sprocket cover as well ans some minor glitches like a charred cylinder cover:

Other than that she was in pretty good shape as you can see form the magneto side's coating:

kurbelgehaeuse_dichtung.jpg

Since she had some clearance on crank ends I gave her new main bearings.

Another common problem with this model is the oil-outlet-block which shrinks during the years and leaves a gap between it and the metal motor block where oil will go AWOL instead of into the oil grove and into the bar. I usually fix that with a cut-out piece of bicycle tire hose which I glue into the gap.

A used sprocket cover a and used cylinder hood made her look like (almost9 new:

More on similar saws to come soon

Hey now!
I have love for all Dolmar saws, but I certainly have a thing for the strong ones. :icon12:

I passed up a good looking PS-400 from a seller I already got two saws from.
Price was good, maybe I should have saved her.

But, I am looking to double/triple/quadruple up on units that I already own - for redundancy down the road to a grimm future.

Some of my precious's.

Question for you Dolmar/makita gurus.

What's the difference between a Makita dcs520 and a 5200i? It's hard to find specs on these saws, but, from what I have found that are the same other than power output. What gives? The p/c from what I can find are the same as well.

Looking to add a DCS4300i and DCS5200i to the stable, but am having a hard time finding any. But I can did find a DCS520.

Also, I have not been able to find decals for the makita saws. Is there a place that's not online I don't know about?

Thanks for any and all help.

There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the two other than rated power.
Most likely just a model designation difference for an open port cylinder vs a closed port cylinder design - hence the higher power output of the 5200.

NOPE, never mind that!
Same cylinder, piston and ring.
Maybe it is just a marketing thing, lesser restricted muffler for non-US market as there is a USA only muffler listed in the IPL.

It depends on which IPL you go on, see attached IPL, it shows a different parts for 520 and 5200i, I believed them to be closed port on 5200i, the same as Dolmar 115i, that plus the carb also giving a bit more grunt and a 1000rpm max revs.

Your IPL is 1999, mine is 2004.

No telling what was going on with Makita designating model numbers.

DCS520 has open transfers vs. closed ones with DCS5200 (same as with Dolmar 111 vs. 115).
However having listed the same cylinder for both DCS520 and DCS5200 in the later IPLs
doesn't tell anything about the original features but rather a lot about spare part logistics.
Apparently the bean-counters thought it cheaper to only have one cylinder in stock and
possibly give away a little bit of extra power for 111-spare-customers than to keep
both cylinder variants in stock.

BTW: I am the one maintaining the page @FATBOY2017 has linked to in the previous post.

@Wilhelm @FATBOY2017 @old_sir_henry

Thank you all for the information. You have given some good reading literature. I would prefer the closed port cylinder. And I guess from the information given, that would limit me to the DCS4300i and DCS5200i. But, if they can't be found, I will settle for the DCS430 and DCS520.

I could also go for the dolmar version as well. But would prefer the Makita version.

Thanks again for all the good information!!

I leave them to people in need!
I have my DOLMAR PS-7900H (the strong non-SLR one)

View attachment 370270

and my custom-built PS-8700 (a modded PS-7900 with
big-bore top-end and Solo crankshaft for an extra millimeter of stroke
yielding 87 cc displacement, ported, muffler-mod, modified carb ...

View attachment 370269View attachment 370268

I'm quite happy with both of them ...
8700, nice! That’s a cool saw. I bet she pulls pretty good. What top end did you use?
