We have a beech species nick named "red" beech, its grain is all wavy.
It is famed to be unsplitable and no one wants it.

I came across a short piece of it and it bucked easy.

It is quite possible we are referring to different subspecies of beech, but generally I think beech bucks easy due to its short grain.

First time into a PS-5100... Owner was having a hot start issue so I went through my usual service but am suspecting coil.

Anywho, after a much-needed carb rebuild and the usual, she’s a runner. Setting the max rpms is easy as it’s responding well. But... I don’t trust the rpms this thing appears to spin. I read on AS that 14000ish is “factory.” Yikes! Does anyone have any comment on that? Longevity of these saws seem ok at those rpms?

Knowing this guy, Ill set it at 13500 w a good 4-stroke and leave it.

Now to get this thing hot and check spark...

Hey buddy...It has limited coil I know that. What color is the coil? My 5100 has the white and says 14,500 on the shroud. I am not sure what the other coils are limited to?

The newer red replacement coil is 13,500. Has a different timing curve than the white one too. Supposedly the saws run a little better with the red one, but I’ve never tried or had the chance to compare the two. No 5100S here, unfortunately.

Hey man!
Yep, limited white/grey coil. Unlike my beloved 1125s, this saw has a broad “good” range on the high side. It sounds good from 12800-14000 almost. I need to tune it in wood but definitely want to err on the rich side.
I was curious about how well bearings and other bottom end parts are handling the higher rpms.

My instinct is to keep it around 13500 if it’s pulling well enough in hardwood.

I’ve been into 3-4 Dolmars and I like this one so far.

European must be another species. Or a growing climate thing. The last we cut here(in July) went for Railroad ties. Has to be a pretty dense stick to make a tie.

there’s some horrible stuff over here it’s easier to cube it up with the saw rather than splitting it

American Beech is really a big weed of a native tree here. It’s a problem species because the deer don’t eat it as much as they do oak, the big hole in the forests left by dead/dying ash and climate change is helping them thrive as well. So you end up with dense thickets of beech and birch saplings choking everything else out with little to no regeneration from other native species. Its also not worth much as saw logs here... mostly goes for firewood or low grade ties/mat logs. A mature specimen sure is a beautiful looking tree with that smooth bark, but it is becoming a problem around here in New England imo.

Mostly they get so old here and go hollow. Managed to knock out quite a few that weren't to far gone. Took a ride yesterday between them ,the weed cherry and the Poplar we put a nice sized hole in the canopy. Give the oak a little elbow room.

510€ for a EA5001P here, they are still available.Dolmar brand disappeared a few years back, only Makita for us now. They never where on the cheap side, always on par with the other pro makers.Same for Echo, their trimmers are more expencive than Stihl or Husky.Dolmar-Makita parts are a joke, you can't find anything, sadly.

I have been a bit lazy the last weeks when it comes to Dolmar saws.
Maybe its because I haven't had any lumber to cut since more than a year now.
Another reason is my Pioneer 650 kept me busy and my Porsche 914 (the one
in my avatar) has demanded quite a bit attention from me (after years of
minimal service and just having fun thats OK for me though).

Recently I came back to DOLMAR 120si I bougth this August (pictured first on page
250) and started reviewing her. Some impressions:

120si_identplate.jpg
This 120si is a very late one, the model has been replaced by the PS-6800i the very same year.
Mine looks quite good at first glance, but when it comes to details I find some botch-up repairs at nearly every aspect of her.
Look at the clutch drum: It can shifted in axial direction for several millimeters even that far to the clutch side it looses grip
to the plastic pump worm. Either there are shims missing or the drum or clutch don't belong to this model.

120si_wrong_muffler-bolt.jpg

Wrong bolt with the muffler. After 1993 all bolts are supposed to be torx an not Allen.

120si_starter_missing_bolt.jpg

One bolt missing from the starter housing ...

120si_body_broken_bore_starter.jpg
... because of a broken bore on the saw's body.

120si_flywheel_dented_fins.jpg

The fins of the flywheel are all dented the same way. Must have been some hard object flying around there some time, probably the nut of the flywheel. There are no corresponding traces in the starter housing, so I assume it to be a replacement part and maybe this incident might have been the cause for the broken bore.

120si_ignition_repair.jpg

Kill line repair. Yes, one can do it this way but it just looks crap. See how the cramp for ignition line has been stuffed between the cooling fins instead of being hooked into the bore.

120si_carb_mount_bolts.jpg

Right carb mount bolt is what? And where is the tank's ventilation line?

120si_brake_band.jpg

Replacement brake band. Yes I know the right ones are very hard to come by but the replacement part ought to be fixed to shell at least.

Well this all isn't actually serious but when you find so many examples of some moron having tampered with the saw, I'll have an uneasy feeling of what I might find inside

Hi everyone

I'm looking for some full wrap handle bars to put on my 9010 and 7900. Possibly also for the 6100 (depending on the total cost). The dealers in my area can't seem to get them. I live in Belgium btw.

Somebody here on the forum that can help me out? Preferably within the European Union to reduce shipping costs?
