Hi guys,I've got a 306A that has an oil leak.I pulled the clutch & took out the 4 screws that hold the oil tank cover on & I still can't seem to get it off.I believe the gasket went bad.What else do I need to do to get the cover off?

Thanks Tim,I removed the screws as stated & the cover won't budge.I'm afraid if I try to pry on it anymore than I already have that it's going to break.

I found a much more clear IPL. That might help you

According to the IPL all I need to do is remove the 4 screws & the cover comes off.There's gotta be something else holding it on.In the IPL it has the oil tank fill plug on the same side as the cover,on my saw it's on the FW side.

There's a helluva lot more to it than what's described in the IPL & instruction manual.In order to get the tank cover off you must remove the entire tank assembly & gear drive from the crankshaft.In order to remove the tank assembly you must remove a bolt under the FW housing.Once the tank is off,then you can remove the 4th screw that's on the backside of thje oil tank.Poulan made it as clear as mud.

If you are just trying to split the oil tank while it's still on the saw you need to further. You need to get the entire tank/ bar pad assembly off before you can access the remaining bolt(s) to split the tank so yo can seal it up.

Have a look at page 4 in the 200 - 300 manual to see that assembly out of the saw and how to pry it off.

I've got a gasket ordered & should be here by the end of the week.

Now on to a 3400 I've had torn down for well over a yr.The oil pick up line had rotted in half & it was picking up unfiltered oil.The pump probably set the record for the dirtiest pump ever.Over the past 15 months I lost the brass "screw" that goes into the oil discharge port.I believe it's called an "oil exhaust check valve".Since this is missing I believe it's the reason why oil pours out as fast as I pour it in.The part # on the 306A is 23077 & I'm assuming that Poulan didn't make any changes from one model to the next.I could very well be wrong.

Edit:I was wrong on that 3400 part # & description.Part # 15422 - slotted tubing nut.

On one of my very first fires in 1991, there was a local faller out of Roseburg working the big snags on the south side of the fire. He was running a 655BP with a 42" bar. He fell a Hemlock on that fire that was around 70" DBH.

You try Kevin (Redneckchainsawrepair) on the other forum (hes a member here also "cut4fun" but rarely ventures over here)?
Very fair prices with Kevin.
I bought 4 NOS crank seals for Poulan 3300 from him for $6/ea.
They sell for $25-$30 each on fleabay (unobtainium).
