They named the new guy Brandon so now we have Annie on the left looking insane and Brandon on the right.

Calf #3 got brought home today. A Charlios/Brown Swiss cross that’s 42 days old already. Traded some hay for him. Not a bad deal really.


We also put some insulated reflective covers on top of the hutches to help keep them cool.

The little 2 day old crossbreeds are bringing $1250 up here. The white guy would likely fetch closer to $1500 at his age. Bonkers.

I dated a girl in college with those same eyes. It was fun …. For a while lol.

The calves are not pets but I find myself hanging out at the “calf ranch” more than I need to giving out head scratches or just talking to them. What’s wrong with me lol

Neighbor had a breakdown and called yesterday. We cut the last of his wheat and hauled it in for him. He’s a good guy so just being neighborly

I finished planting beans so in a pretty good spot right now. Had a good rain last night too. Corn has potential to do well.

Hell yeah brotha new asphalt to cruise on !! Finished up 2nd pass on my own soybeans and am working on custom work again. We’ve had a couple amazing spray days so far this week with the last two days being able to go from the moment the dew was off until dark.


Where do these confounded weeds keep coming from


I broke down and got AutoPath for the new monitor. Wowser !! It follows exactly where the planter went and I just hang out and pick my nose. Doing a touch over an acre a minute really knocks things out in a hurry !


Gives me more time to watch the sprayer and make sure the nozzles I can see are all working.

So we built a calf-tainment zone so I hopefully don’t have to run my out of shape self all over Gods country to catch these spunky little buggers anymore !!

There is no doubt they can run but if they are still bottle/bucket fed they generally come home.

I am wondering how many folks have experience with FSA/NRCS buffer strips. The FSA/NRCS likes to change the name of them but I they are about the same. I am considering a 1/2 mile strip along a drainage ditch but they are telling me I have to put in in CRP. Well then in 10 years if I farm it again I am in violation of the 1985 Farm Bill Sodbuster provision.

In my experience with the buffer strips & the educated idiots in tge guberment office is : they don’t want them mowed or even driven on. Then the strips get infested with trees then they b*tch & squawk about not being in compliance & threaten to kick you out of the program & you “need” their approval to mow or spray the strip.

Do the strips work, I guess they do but special approval shouldn’t be needed for maintenance on them. A mowing once a year or every other year helps to keep the weeds & trees under control.

There are a lot of the buffers along creeks/ditches here with row crop above them.

They are going shiet when the excavator piles the spoil on them from digging the ditch this winter.

Calf #4 has arrived ! He was born a few weeks early and is a really little dude. Smaller than a full size black lab if I had to put a size on em. We’ll have to keep an extra close eye on him.
