Flaterized around 160 acres today for Pops to plant beans on. Working on some tillage again now to try ti keep ahead.

Getting those soybeans in !!

I wanted a four box tender so Pops got a two box tender. “We don’t need a four box tender. A two box tender will hold 225 acres of corn, we’ll never do that in one day”. Well gee it’s only 90 acres of beans and we’ll easily do that and then some in a day. So now I fill it around 2pm so he can keep going. Oh well. He paid for it and it’s better than slinging bags like we used to do so 🤷‍♂️

In the late 1970's a neighbor south of us bought a 24 row Kinze. They used to joke it took them 3 hours to fill it with bags. I do not believe they had it more than 8-10 years before they went to a 12 row.

Soybean year plot is done !! I’ve got everything in our lineup from 0.6-1.9 both Enlist and ExtendFlex. An 0.6 is pretty early for us and a 1.9 is getting a little ways out there. We planted all 1.3 and 1.5’s on the rest of the acres. Well, there are 20 acres of some 1.8’s I snuck in to see how they do since we’re planting beans first.

Low acre, one owner Deere 1760 that’s only been outside when it’s planting. Be a shame to get rid of it but I’d like to go to electric drives and a 16 row. I’m not quite ready to shell out the $$$$$$$$ for it yet so we’ll see lol

I got far enough ahead with tillage and decided to plant some sweet corn. Three varieties and around a half acre again this year.
IMG_3590.jpeg

Back to tillage after a brief break !! We spread rye last fall on frozen ground to see what would happen and it grew quite well. It was sort of fun working this under.

Nice Ranger. I bought a 1988 in 1992 for $150. It was an ex-railroad truck, green in color, In Earl Scheib fashion we sprayed her white and I drove the snot out of it. It was a 4 banger with a 4 speed auto but she lost overdrive so I drove it in three gears. I later slipped a junkyard tranny in it but the damn torque converter was bad so in cold weather you had to rev her up to build pressure.

Fun ole truck

Did you use some of last years leftover seed?

Yup. One 2.5k bag that was in the freezer since last spring. The other stuff was all this years seed. I have 28 bags of seed from last year I’m going to plant tomorrow. Kept in the shop since spring so it’ll be fine. Nice and cool in the summer in there what with the AC and all.

Rye seems to do very well here, it gets flown on by plane or drone end of Aug. into September.

NRCS would soil their britches if we worked it under, it gets nuked.

You don’t have to get very far north of here & you don’t see any fall rye. Your table top flat ground doesn’t look like it needs rye for erosion control.

It does seem to help significantly with weed control though.

I told Chase he was planting his plots this year, I detest planting plots. He had 3 corn plots this year.

He hasn’t done a bean plot for several years.

There are some 2-2’s going in around here but most are 2-6’s or longer.

Last year was the first year my brother planted some short season beans & it worked out well.

I would say that 80% or better of the planting is done around here, as usual my brother is going to be one of the last done.

Weather is supposed to be good for the next week or so so maybe we can make some good progress.

I do my own “plots in every field nearly. I’ll put 3-4 numbers out there together just to see what can do what. Dekalb rep called me this year to get me to try his stuff. Told me if the pioneer can beat it I would be paid for the difference.

I declined the offer but did buy some of the corn he told me was his best stuff. Will see how it goes

I declined because it sounded like a pain in the ass. They wanted proof of my planting records and 6 rows vs 6 rows across a field. I just planted it the way I wanted. Not sure if they were afraid some would fudge the tests. I put them out there together and I’ll treat them the same. I don’t have time to toy with the data. I’m gonna try to send them both to the moon and see what happens.

Dekalb has routinely been the best yielder for my brother,

I always plant some Dekalb for Chase as well, 6x6 with some other breed of corn.

He really doesn’t know how it does because he runs with a 12 row head.

When he did use a 6 row head, he never had any feedback on the results.

He has moved to more Wyffels than GH.

I planted a bunch of 68# Wyffels for him this year, I don’t recall the number.

Wyffels 7876 is a big seller for him & generally yeilds really well.

The camera must flatten things out lol. Or I don’t post pictures of the hilly stuff. We have a few fields that will never be anything but hay/grass as they’ll wash 3’ deep if tilled. Hills and light soil make a mess.

I did a soybean and corn plot by me for my own data and we’ll have around 60 entries in our show plot. 40 corn and 20 beans. I think we’ll be doing that one tomorrow. With four guys and a 12r planter it doesn’t take long. Two vacs at the end sucking seed out, one guy putting seed in and the planter guy records what’s going where. It doesn’t take as long as one would expect.

This year we could have gotten away with some 1.8-2.0’s for sure looking how well planting goes. As soon as a guy gets cocky though the summer turns wet and cold and I have to put the low temp kit on the dryer again. That’s no fun

How long is your corn you plant? Where are you located? I’m genuinely curious around here I grow group 5 and 4.5 soybeans

Corn is anywhere from 112 day to 118

I'll plant anything from 87 - 107. I plant the bulk of it in that 95-103 range. We take forage rye off some years and plant the early stuff in that and the 107 is for high moisture if needed.

Guys that do silage up here will go up to 117 day and up to that 110 day for high moisture.

We've done 0.9-1.8 beans but the sweet spot seems to be that 1.3-1.5 for our operation.

Any issues with wire worms in the corn that goes into the rye ground ?
