Somebody made it home tonight. Only took a picture of its ear tag for reference since I had some cow sorting and loading to do. Kicked him in with the cows and he settled down easy. Sire is MOGCK Entice.

Got to get a sort done and put the ones going to butcher in this pen for a bit of grain. Just trying to get a little grass going since everything is brown except for the weeds. Young things think they need to stand in the sprinkler.

Didn't think you guys did round bales over there. Thought you were a large square kind of people?

down in our area Steve it’s about 70% rounds still being baled
the bigger units and horse farms like big squares
And a good market for small bales

I got 22 bags(4 1/2 dozen ears per bag) and my brother got another 17, other than light blackbird damage it’s good pickins. We do anywhere from 20 to a 100 bags plus depending on the day, retail and wholesale. This is a bi-color early supersweet variety called kickoff and it’s pretty darn good.

The burlap hula skirt is what you get when you stuff your belt full of burlap potato sacks, I can usually get 12-15 on there. If you pack extra on you can keep the front of your pants and your giblets dry… well maybe once in a while. It’s a losing battle, I’ve tried rain pants and I just end up sweating through em.

We have an oxbo cp 100 picker but I like to handpick until the block is 80-90% ready. I’ll post some pictures in the next couple days when we get that going.

That was a pretty good haul for 2nd cutting with no fertilizer. What type of grass is it ? The 2nd cutting around here wasn’t anything spectacular, there won’t be a 2nd cutting for some folks. Well some will mow it but it may make 1/2 bale/acre. Most folks that usually get 3 cuttings won’t be seeing that 3rd one materialize.

My hay is probably 60/40 alfalfa & grass. I like to use a mix of Fescue, Timothy, and Orchard grass. Part of the reason the crop was on the heavy side is that I was about two weeks late on cutting it. Now I will only be able to get 3 crops instead of 4. The Orchard grass is nuts…I cut last Sunday and the Orchard is already about 10” tall.

We’ll be lucky to get much of a second cutting [emoji2959]
