So hell wind and rain in a thunderstorm last evening. Layed my sweet corn down pretty bad. What's the likelyhood it'll stand back up? Looks like dog chit now.
They’ll try, but will just end up bent stalks..

And will be ugly and piss you off from here on out.

Why can’t those guys make a decent sweet corn that stands up to wind like the field corn varieties??

The toughest plants I’ve had so far were the dekalb variety I planted last year.they were shorter than most and also roundup ready.
I’ll be going back to that stuff next year.

Its sucks a big one, working your nuts off doing it all by hand then getting it rammed up your azz by nature. How it goes I guess.

It's really amazing we can even feed ourselves, when you consider how hostile weather is.

The one thing in our area I have found to be somewhat "weather durable" is cows and grass.
If it turns off hot and dry, the cows eat the grass till there ain't no more, but the grass ain't gone, it's just waiting..
If its cool and wet for weeks at a time, it's still there. And so are the cows..
People think that growing a crop for direct food stock is way more efficient that the acres used producing beef, and they'd be right..

But the beefers can make use of ground not suitable for anything else. Be it dirt quality, or hostile weather, or bugs and many other pestilence...

We dont just get rain or normal weather at all here anymore. It's always extreme ofbevery spectrum of the weather.

You and I may just not be quite old enough to have seen all the extreme cycles the the ole *b-word can dole out...
Had a good conversation with the neighbor about this exact topic..
He’s almost 90..
He said the 30’s and the 50’s were WAY worse..
That’s why his family and most others went to more animal based operations... With the last 15 years being a little more moderate, people have gone to more crops because you can make more per acre on average, but they dont know any different...
Enough crop failures, and we may see a change back, who knows..

Good morning Randy.
I'm no farmer though. Just have mucho respect for it. Both sides of my family grew up in farm country that I visited often as a child.
I did spend a few years in my 30s living on a pig farm. Put my share of help there from tine to time.
Now I'm here. Will send a pic or two later.
Hope you had a great day yesterday.

Edit: Had to edit a bunch of crap in this post. Must been before I had my coffee when I put this out.

As far as sweet corn worms. The only way I’ve ever been able to grow any worm free is if I get it planted super early. Seems the worm doesn’t get there fast enough

Also seems like it’s super hit or miss about the corn coming up too. As said a little shot of pesticides is a must typically.

I’m in Delaware so the times I’ve gotten sweet corn up in late April are few and far between. But the times I did pretty worm free

@Coltont ive seen sweet corn bend back upwards to a position that didn’t effect anything. Is it tasseled out yet? If not you’ll have a better chance. Because the plant is still trying to grow stalk
Believe it or not this was all on the ground and looked like hell 2 days ago. Its Providence variety. Dont know if its tougher or something. I would have never expected it to stand back up. Maybe the *s-word of 20 10 10 I gave it 2 weeks ago got some roots down a little deeper? Idk not gonna *b-word though. BCS needs to start making *s-word faster. I ordered all the goodies to equip this 735 2 wheel tractor for digging taters and it's all back ordered to september/october........fark.

Sweet corn needs to be planted as early as possible, less bugs and weeds.
We would bed the soil up early to help warm it them knock it down and plant usually early March.

Ripper bedders, sheffeild sweeps, cultivaters, rolling cultivators, Cole planters. all those old tools.
I still have an old 2 disc Disc plow too.

Where are you from? In March in Delaware you’d never get a single grain out of the ground. Even with plastic . Field corn wouldn’t come up here either.

the earlier the better I’ve gotta agree. I really like to try may 1st here. That is usually about the best I can do. I’ve lost plenty around then too

I understand what your saying. I was behind the 8 ball this year. Didt plant until memorial day. I didnt have it done. On the devil's advocate side I may have lucked out by getting it in later since it isnt in tassel. At any rate hopefully I get a dozen or two from it, I'll definitely log this year in my brain as a learning year.

This was the last field..

We call it “The hole”..

Ain’t no good way into it other than driving down the snake path. That’s why we used Danny’s old grain truck and the cart. The big trucks stay parked about 2 miles away on the road.
