The most "Overrated" saw you own/owned ?

[emoji4] I ran two of them back-to-back a stock one and a ported one. The stock one was a dog, the ported one was much much better, but still didn't knock my socks off. This isn't to knock them on build quality, durability or anything like that, just from a power and feel standpoint.

After running commercial mowers and whatnot for years my hands can't take much vibration, even smoother saws cause my hands to start tingling, and they burn for days afterwards. So other than for fun at GTG's and what not, no AV or rubber AV saws are out. Even running my stand on mower isn't fun anymore.[emoji20]

I was actually going to mention the 461, I have owned 3 and just can't quite ever figure out why guys like them so much, they seem heavy to me for the power they make, I much prefer a 7910 or a hybrid or even for the weight a 064.

288 is a great saw but there totally blown out of proportion and exaggerated that one expects it it to be the end all to all saws. Also drives the prices up too.

You gotta keep in mind the 288 came out in 1988, but it's simplistic design and ruggability, power to weight keep it mentioned as a legendary saw 30 yrs later, not sure we will say the same about any of the new saws coming out.

Finished a 362 recently for a fella here. It was a turd right out of the box and wasnt much better after work. He needed it for a job so I sent it off. His impressions were as yours.

Then out of the blue he called me and said it was like a switch and its a completely different saw. Im still unsure why.

I cant believe it was just the break in. Ive built quite a few new out of the box and never saw one like this.

I've had some fast 60cc saws.

This 362 you ported will snort with the best of em'..you done good.

I have a 12 MM. My 50cc Dolmar just about keeps up with it.

All I've done to it is a mild muff mod and re-ring it with new Cabers. It should have more torque than a 50cc saw, but it's unfortunately much closer than it should be...

I've had a metric *s-word ton of 044/440s.. I had one that was a ringer..musta had good digits, the other ones I could give or take..so I agree.

The 346's were hit and miss, some were dogs others were screamers. I have a mostly stock 346 that will hang with fully ported saws.

They were. This old one I ended up with would stomp the newer ones I had.

MS260, MS362, MS660
With work, they can run with other stock saws in their class.

I have to agree about the MS260. I bought one back when they were the current model, based on all the hype about them. I was VERY disappointed! The upside was that the hype made it easy to sell it for more than it was worth!

I don't understand how MS290's/029's & MS390's made it onto this thread. I've never heard a good word about them!

The 7901 is a great saw, but is let down by the quality of the plastics. If I only ever cut timber, I'd own one again. But I cut a lot of palms too & the clutch cover on these gets eaten out by the acid in the palms quicker than any other saw I've owned. 660's aren't great in that area either.

Now that's funny.

However, a couple a months ago I was cutting with a bloke and he needed to change his chain. I told him to just use my 029 to finish off what we were doing. When we were finished he said "These saws really cut, I may have to get one."

I told him I had done a lot of work to the saw. "Yeah, like what?" After spending about 5 minutes explaining how I had changed or modified virtually EVERY part of the saw, he said "With that much work, why not just get a better saw?"

Speaking of the truth, the 272 will seem weak cutting alongside of a 266 until you get into a big enough log, then hands down the 272 will out cut the 266. Most of the local 044/440, would get outran by a 272. Most of the problem with this was the tune the Stihl shop was sending the saws out with.
Every Pro and semi Pro user has dropped all of them in favor of the 372, which is still in great use today. With the high cost of new saws I don't see anything else taking over for a while here locally, the 562 is putting a dent in the trend, slowly as it may be.
That said, take any old 266,268,272,630,670, 044,440 and make a great firewood saw for folks.
