The Cut Report - After the Bench

Even got rid of the oil leak. This thing has hondabond in nearly every mating surface that can leak. Oil pickup hose to tank joint. Pickup to oil pump housing. Output hose to chain guide plate all lightly coated on re-assembly and doesn’t leak anything now except what’s in the clutch cover

It started life as this pile of parts @dall hooked me up with.

After some scrubbing, lots of dumb chit questions sent to Dallas, I ended up with this.




New oem bearings, gaskets, a Meteor piston and other oem odds and ends.
Squish came in at .025" without gasket.

The only real snafu was when I forgot the seal on the output side of the oil pump.
My boots now have a nice coat of bar oil.

With all that said, it is currently only set to 12,600 and Ive only cut a few cookies, but i am happy with it!

I will fiddle with the carb when I have more time. I just wanted to cut something with it between the downpours.

Thanks Steve! Yeah, I'm pretty sure theres stuff in it that went from northern Wi, to Wv and back to central Wi.

Have a double cut report on a 266 that I built from scratch. Here is how it ran when it was finished.

Decided to sell it here on the forum @zeebee413 came along and bought it and wanted it ported before I shipped it which I was agreeable to.
The new piston has a scratch on it upon disassembly.

So, I ordered a new one. Had to box it up and get at some other projects.
Got back at it and did the machine work.


Have to clearance the case for the carb block and keep all the little JMS's out of the crankcase.


New good stuff going in.

If you would of just ground on it the jug on the saw it would of stopped all that man glitter from falling in there.

After all the port work was done was time to give it a go.
Adjusted it a hair less than 14,500 rpm.

Which after checking the spark plug color confirmed it.

...and been in the intake.
I hang it vertical in the saw mount and with it covered up and a cardboard shield It stays nice and clean using gravity against itself.

The AM chain break that was on this saw would not hold the engine back, it could power through, which is unacceptable. So I swapped it with an original from my 272, so as not to have it's new owner have issue with it.
Also ended up with a D handle on the starter, as well as plenty of rope to pull all you like on this little monster. Also to note that the exact same bar and chain was used for both vidja test cuts. So pretty easy to see gains made.
All in all I like this saw turned out, it's a real go getter.

Had the same problem with a 394 chainbrake (AM as well) after some investigation the coil spring that pushes on the band was shorter and not as strong as OEM. Swapped with oem spring and it worked. Might be worth looking into?

Good to know, seems to be a pattern with those folks not understanding the concept of spring pressure.
Here's another tip, never use a Chinese metering spring in a carburetor. Either use the old one, or buy an OEM. They are either too light or too heavy every time.

AM clutch springs have also been an issue!
