I just wanted some opinions. I know that every once in a while I come across a saw that is in disrepair and always have the urge to "fix it"
I have found some that are less then fun to work on.
What do you consider the best saw to fix. As far as ease to work on, ease of parts. Cost and the most important fun after running.

The 026-066 are easy to work and good gains can be found from simple porting.

The 353 husky is also a great one if your wanting to learn porting. The removable trans covers make it so can play with the trans timing without a right angle grinder.

Dam I can go on.

What cc range.

Stihl 441. If this was your first saw, it would give you 2nd thoughts about working on saws. Probably cut down on the local CAD competition to boot :D
I don't think its that hard working on the 441. It's the 029/039 that's a pain to work on

Dolmar 6400.... can only go up.

Can turn it into a 73 or 79 cc saw.

I think they are easy to work on, parts are reasonable online.

You might find a blown up makita/dolmar that was a rental at home depot

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

You can always justify another saw.

Stihl 026. They are easy to find and parts are everywhere. Split the cases and install new crank bearings and seals. It's much easier that way than trying to pull the tiny flywheel side seal from the outside and you will learn a lot from doing it. It's a great saw, even compared to the new techno wonders.

Whatever is cheap, cause most likely something is gonna happen. My first project / experiment let's see what happens when I ______. Was an old craftsman 3.7 aka poulan 3800 I found in an old garage for free. Spent about $20 bringing it back to life and had a lot of fun grinding this, removing that, etc. After a while I lost interest in it and moved on to the more common , more valuable saws.

Whatever dealer is close. Stihl is 3 miles from me and they have tons of parts on hand. Nothing's worse than paying $6 shipping on a $2 part.

Comparatively the 441 is more of a pain than others. Just think about how easy the 044/440's were or a 6400/7900 series.

As for the 029/390 series. Yea they take longer but I have full clean and rebuild time down to about 1-1.5 hrs including pulling limiters and MM. Doing 40+ per year helps speed the process. [emoji16]
