Funny you say that, cause as a hard core Husky guy, the one Stihl I'd own would be the 044. :)
You Don't fancy a Ms 361 along with your 044 then Sir ? ...Iv Mostly Husqvarna and Dolmar but iv kept the Ms 361 (Euro version)

Another vote for Husky 51 or 55.
A cheap way to learn rebuilding is the 42cc Poulan genre. Can buy for $5-10 as nonrunners. Be careful of compression, tho. Strato Poulans (2006 and newer) are prone to run so lean that they score P&C. And they aren't worth a $17 piston kit, certainly not a $65 P&C kit. I've got 4 disassembled Poulans that are just parts waiting on something - maybe FarmerTec will come out with the $12 topend!

Id say the 200 series of Husqvarna are the easiest to work on 266, 272, 262, 254 etc. Some parts aslo mix and match with a few other makes and models.
If I had only one saw to work on it would be the 372.

McCulloch 250. Heavy doesn't move easely when replacing small parts. Don't really have to have special small engine tools as required with newer saws. A socket set, two screw drivers, fealer guages, small gear puller your in business. And restoreing a piece of American history. Parts are still quite common also. Don't let the Points and condenser set scare you. They are avabile along with Electronic conversion kits.
i'll say the same for pioneer ra thru 650. canuck history, cant beat the sound of the ra muff. have a few here. 650 & ra pic'd.

I'd say the 61-272 huskies as I'm a complete newbie too and I find them pretty easy to work on .
