Has anyone tried putting a 460 crank in a 440? If that’s not possible, has anyone tried putting a 440 top end on a 460? I would think it would have a lot of torque with wither conversion. Thoughts?

440 and 460 basically have the same crank. Same connecting rod and stroke but different width on the shafts and counter weights.

The 460 is the evolution of the 044. Bigger stronger crank. More oil and fuel capacity and 2mm bigger bore with same stroke.

A good 460 will generally outrun and hybrid. The 460 crank is around 80-100 grams heavier than the 12mm 440 crank. Haven’t weighed in som time, but side by side the difference is obvious.

The 460 crank has a groove for a C clip that the 440 doesn’t share. It also uses a standard PTO side seal that’s the same as 026/036. The 440 crank uses a crank spacer and bigger seal.

A 460 crank won’t fit into a 440 case. I would be interested in putting an 064/066 crank into a 460, as the 066 jug base bolt pattern is the same as the 460. Could increase displacement by 14cc, but seems like a lot of work for a saw that would be marginally lighter and smaller than an 064 with an 066 top end.

Something Brisco did, took a lot of meat off the crank

I’d say an 064 and 046 are about even for weight empty, or maybe a 461 would be closer.

This would be very interesting. I wonder how touchy it would be with the obviously smaller case volume..? Maybe a screamer..

Actually I don’t really think the 460 has a stronger crank.. the con rod is the same, big and small end.

I think 80cc would be about the limit on a 440/460, 54mm bore doesn’t work nor does a 40mm stroke.
