Hello all im Phil from New Zealand, this is my first post, I have a MS361 with 440 crank and 460 cylinder. Used a 440 carb,272 piston ,ms360 flywheel and modded 361 muffler ,all running good with original covers. Cylinder holes required a lot of slotting to fit the different bolt pattern and cases needed machining for crank clearance.

The stroke difference is what counts more than anything. The 361 has a 34 mm stroke. The 460 has a 36 mm stroke. Therefore, a 460 top end will not work with a 361 crank.

p.s. Carbs are not the same either along with a multitude of other parts. Just MHO.

Depends on deck height of the case

Has anyone in Michigan ever installed a Stihl 460 top end on a Stihl 361 along with a bunch of other parts that would be required and then created a stronger saw that ran well? Just curious.

I haven’t. But it’s probably been done before if it’s possible

Some pics not very good sorry, 3rd one shows how far cylinder hole is slotted. This was off a 440 460 hybrid so holes were already slotted. If using a new cylinder these could be drilled instead of slotted.
