Which part needs to be reprogramed by the dealer on the 3.0 M-tronic? Coil? Carb/solenoid?

I tried searching google but couldn't find anything.. Maybe I'm using the wrong search term.. I can locate the factory reset procedure by using the choke, but nothing about needed to bring your saw in to have the dealer plug it in for reprograming a new replacement part.

Long story short, there is a Stihl saw I would like, but its M-tronic, and I hate the idea of being at the mercy of the dealer when it come to needing their computer.

Thanks

I have a MS 261c, being able to hook up to the Stihl program can provide some useful information if you are trouble shooting, but that said, I don't have a way to test mine without taking it in too. I have worked on a few other mTronic saws and was able to troubleshoot and rebuild them as needed and run them through their factory reset procedure without connecting up to the computer. They are running fine. So far I have not heard of any issues with the saw needing a firmware upgrade as opposed to some of the 500 series Husqvarna saws which will quit when they have an out-of-tolerance situation and shut down for protection, then requiring it to be connected to a computer and the firmware either re-installed or upgraded. With mTronic, I think the computer connection is more of an aid to troubleshooting than a necessity for running. Very helpful when customer says they have only put a tank of gas through the saw, but the data shows 85 hours run time with 400 starts...

I am not sure off hand, however I believe the tool is hooked into the wiring harness, my guess is that there is a chip in the coil or something. Hopefully one of the Stihl dealers/repairmen here in the forum might chime in and provide more info. I do know that if you want to convert a mTronic to standard carb, you need to change out the coil, flywheel, carb and wiring harness (that is why my guess is the coil).

I guess my question was is the Stihl MDG required to reprogram a new part? Like if you change a coil or solenoid does it need to be plugged in? Like on a car, some modules / computers need to be "flashed" by the dealer or the car won't start or run right..
As Kevin said just replace part to field reset and run it. All the solenoids are the same to so if you keep a spare white for the newer saws at home and the saw quits running well and doesn’t clear up with a field reset you can put a fuel filter and solenoid in and that will usually fix it.

Thanks. Now that you said Husky I think the post I remembered reading was a Husky post.
The Stihl stuff won’t require any hook ups to map components to anything because all the brains are in the coil. A carb on the Stihl has replaceable solenoid so the carb itself is all just a mechanical carb body and no electrical to worry about. Way i understand it is the solenoid on a husky is only sold with the carb as a unit and needs to be mapped to the coil version you have if it’s not a match. Only stihl you need the computer for is the 500i the mtronic ones can be repaired without usually.

Yes the coil has the fuel map, the flywheel has an extra set of magnets and the carb has a big hole in the side the fuel control solenoid gos into so that’s why all the components need to be changed. The coil has a fixed map in it that it uses to tune lean/rich many times a second to maintain an optimal rpm under various loads. It reads engine rpm off the flywheel magnets and uses power generated by the extra set of magnets to power the fuel solenoid the way it was explained to me.

Mtronic means there's no mixture needles to adjust correct? The reason why I ask is because I saw a new Mtronic STIHL string trimmer at the dealer with the same air filter cover that the non-Mtronic string trimmer has. The air filter cover has 3 holes punched in it to access the ( H ) ( L ) needles and the idle speed screw. Maybe they're just continuing to use the same air filter cover from the non Mtronic string trimmer. FS 131 R is the trimmer I'm talking about.

There might be some confusion, did the box/trimmer say mTronic? If so that is a first for me. The trimmer has an "IntellaCarb" that will adjust itself some as the air filter clogs, but not the mTronics which makes changes on many different factors. The IntelliCarbs will still have the adjustable needles. I have a FS 91 R and that is the way mine is set up.

Edit: Yes, you are correct, mTronic does not have human-adjustable needles.

You sure it said mtronic? The 131 is a 4-mix i believe and they haven’t been mtronic so far.
