I have tried the technique a couple of times, but I prefer to use wedges.
500i looks promising so far. I'd like to see it with a muffler mod. It sounds stiffled a bit.
I guess it's a pick your battle. I think the wedges would be faster and easier with not having to muscle the saw on the up cut. But, the wood probably drops and binds the wedge. Then the monster wood has to be rolled to get the wedge out.
I don't know what your definition is but urbandictionary.com has a couple in which I don't think is synonymous with the aformentioned technique.I’ve got one word for you guys and it’s slabbing. This technique of bucking is so you’re less likely to slab out the piece vs using a wedge you’re guaranteed to slab the bottom plus you can widdle on the top or bottom heck or sides depending on the size of timber to release pressure safely.

Sorry a bit off topic but saw this video and can't figure out what's mounted on the top cover of this MS500i. He takes the cover off and it doesn't go through to anything. I'm guessing it's a tracking mechanism, or environmental data collector (fumes etc.) Based on the CE markings I'm guessing it has a small battery. anyone know?

slackerI watched a couple of the videos that Stihl pit out on their Instagram page. Not very impressive at the moment. It showed the 500i with what looked to be a 20" bar cutting an 8 to 10" stick of wood.
Less than impressive. I bet my 261cm could wipe its arse cutting the same stick.
For this 500i to shine they should have a bigger bar cutting a bigger stick of wood.
Just my 2 cents.
yes when you buying a 500 ? LolOh no... Not again...
Just oldI'm an old skool kinda guy.
I agree especially when they only run 7 pin sprocketThere are more 500i videos on youtube. Still mostly 20-25" bars. From what I can tell it takes awhile to break in but does have more grunt than 572, 462. Short bars cutting little cookies aren't a very good way to compare saws above 60cc IMO.
