Got my new K&N and the V stack for the 066 red light today.
I got a smaller one to try and keep it nice and compact.

With much excitement I headed to the garage after dinner to mock it up and see how it will look.

SON.... OF.... A.... *b-word!

It just hits the top of the black throttle linkage cover and wont go on properly.

I should have got another "erectus maximums" like I fitted on the other saw.

2 options:
Cut the top off the handle so the filter fits or
Move Erectus Maximums over onto the red light.

If all this comes together, this saw will be getting a better top end as well so the extra air flow wont go astray.

What size is your "erectus maximums"? :coleman:

Seriously though, I've been looking for a K&N filter ;)

Problem I find with notching the dome of a piston is it does not really give full value. Mainly from the dead area in the squishband, if a piston is to be modified I'd prefer to notch intake side, and if really needed I'd maybe try a pop up. I have only used the trimmed intake skirt on different saws then this tho. I'm no pro just a backyard hack builder.

Yeah deets, Tha is something I thought about.
It would be cheaper to get another $20 v stack than buy another filter.

I might try milling this one.

I need to order some mill bits fir my column drill

My Red Light with spare coil and flywheel. I have owned it for the last ten years and it gets little use, usually a couple times a year it will get a work out. It has lived an easy life. Everything works as good as it did when it left the factory. Stone stock other than a simple muffler mod. I got to thinking I probably have owned it for the last 15 years instead of ten.

If you have the dual key flywheel you can use any coil.
It's been several years since I thought about the Red Light 066 saws, but I was thinking if you go that rout and go with the dual key flywheel and the unlimited coil you will have to change the recoil starter also. The dual keyed flywheels are not as thick as a stock red light flywheel and the starter pawls will not reach the flywheel to engage it. I could very well be wrong about this, like I said it's been several years since thought about doing the same swap to my red light and there were many different style ignition systems that Stihl used on the 064-066 series saws.

I never did do the swap but do have the coil and flywheel and recoil starter somewhere here to do it with. I got lucky just last week and found a parts 066 red light that was ran over by a skidder several years ago with the original coil and fly wheel on it in working condition that will go in my stash.

Hi CRH

Nice red light mate, it even has the original digital sticker on it.

Interesting that it has a plastic badge in stead of the metal badge.

Thanks for the heads up on the possible starter issue.
I have an after market coil (gee I hope they work ok) on the way and a fellow member has helped me out with the flywheel from an ebay seller in the US that would not send to me in Australia.

I got an email today saying that our company would no longer pay us for the overtime we work, so I am now having to re-asses my priorities.

I have had to cancel the cylinder JMS was going to modify for it as im unsure what it is going to cost (I almost threw up with disappointment when I sent him the message) and will probably have to decide between the RL and my newer decomp 066, which one to sell.

That's not going to be an easy decision.

I am probably going to have to sell a lot of my shooting stuff as well to get on top of things as I work a lot of overtime as part of my job and will be losing about a third of my income.

Right now I am self medicating with beer

I have been and run my hands over both the 066's.
This sux!

I have put so much effort into both of them, and have 90% of the gear to get the RL screaming on the way.

I am going to keep them and chip away and getting them done.

I use the saws, I have a safe full of guns that most of which never get used any more.

I like the saws better.

As far as the metal badge it did have it, but the previous owner had scratched his name on it and I hated seeing it there. I had a new plastic badge here and swapped it out for the original.
I got lucky when I got this saw. How I got it was, my wife loves her antiques, me not so much. There was a huge antique auction taking place that weekend and my wife ask me to join her at it. I said I already had plans to do something else ( I really didn't). She got mad and started complaining about how we never spend time together anymore. I gave in and went with her thinking I would keep the peace. We get there and among all the 1000's of pieces of antiques sit this saw. I was floored. Nobody there knew what it was except a larger chainsaw. Everybody there was there for antiques and knew nothing about saws. I got it for I think it was 70.00$. Come to find out how it was there, a lady husband had died and she brought it there just to get rid of it, another reason I took the original badge off, I hated seeing a dead mans name on my saw.LOL. That was 10-15 years ago. I have went to many other antique auctions with her in the past 15 years, but never have I scored on one like I did that one and to this day she tells me that it's her saw, but as far as I know she's never laid a hand on it or plans to. Over the years she has bought me several pretty good saws she sees at auction she's went to that I didn't. She's learned the difference between a pro series saw and a home owners saw, and what good compression a saw should feel like over the years.

Was looking on ebay last night and bought an 064/066 3/4 wrap for my red light.

I couldn't really afford it but you just don't see them pop up that often.
