I have not been able to ascertain the exact SN for the change, but if it starts with 138 or earlier it is good, and if it is 140 or later not so much.

If anyone has saws in that SN range and they know if they are D or not, please share.

Also, if you see a 046 with a DP muff cover, and it is not AM, it is a first year saw (but not all of them had the dp cover, just the Magnums).

After the EPA banned the DP covers, Stihl just started putting "Magnum" on all of em cause they realized it just sold saws! (so it gets confusing)

I think that they do Dall Ace.

I'm just beginning to think that the Hemi Chamber is actually better, contrary to popular belief, at least for porting.

@Canadian farm boy , what are your thoughts now that you've built more hybrids than anyone else? I know the best running 046 I've done to date is a non-D jug, @RI Chevy saw.

Love the new Silver Eagle Avatar Mikey.

My fathers grounds department at his work has a first year 046 then possibly, it has a oem dp cover, just have to check the SN. Pretty sure they bought it new. Maybe I can be first in line when it wears out I can get it :sisi1. I need to get a closer look at it when I tune it up eventually.

I think there's pros and cons to both cylinder designs. In stock form the cylinders seem to be hit or miss as far as performance goes. Some cylinders just port better, plain and simple.
I like the combustion chamber of the hemi cylinder better. I feel it it's just a better design.
The upper transfer ports in a D cylinder are a couple degrees lower and a bit smaller.
Now, after machine work and porting I don't think it matters. D cylinders require a bit less machine work to get a good compression bump but the transfers need to be raised more. The opposite applies to the hemi cylinder.
This is just what I've noticed in general when comparing the 2 types of cylinders. Ymmv.

I'd really like to run the D jug you did for me against that saw sometime. It is a shame that our schedules pulled both Jeff & I away from the CT GTG for most of the time the other was there.
