How did you get started? YouTube vids? 80$ I’d do on those boots but afraid even sending them back to redwing may be non cost effective.

I fell down the rabbit hole when looking for boot reviews lol. I eventually came across 2 different dudes like us doing it own their own and figured why not.

So here is a little of my hackery 20220225_184357.jpg 20220225_184405.jpg 20220225_184423.jpg 20220225_184436.jpg
A started with these because something hot was spilt on them and wrinkled the selastic toe counter making them unwearable.

So another thing I'd like to ad is how boot companies offer different lasts options. In this case I have 2 RW sz 12 EE boots here. The brown ones have tons more room in the toe box than the black. 20220225_195704.jpg 20220225_195740.jpg 20220225_200036.jpg
You can see the subtle differences. It doesn't seem like much but it is.

Now I that I know more I'll probably avoid RW in the future. I haven't had any problems with them but these boots have molded soles so dyi or having someone other than RW do it will be a PIA!

Pricey but custom fit with minimal break in. Only boots that I could get 4 years out of the leather. Used to have local guy to do heels and soles but he quit and the replacements suck. Only got about 2 years on them and now I am looking for a shop elsewhere. Had heels done and they were falling off after a week. I can also send these back to the factory for a rebuild. Been looking for maybe a different brand, but the ones I have tried I have destroyed within 9 months.

I have thought about custom many times, but I wouldn’t want to do it without going in
person, and I’m far from all of them…
We had a dealer in Joplin at the time I got measured for them. He went out of business several years ago but I can go online and order any time I need.

A guy gave me a set of Wesco boots and a set of Wesco Caulks that he bought new in the 80's, I like them so far and I enjoy telling people that I have boots that are older than them! For boots that lived in a shed since the 90's when he quit logging they've held up pretty well. Someday I'll see if I can get them rebuilt but I'll wait until I've worn out a few of my "consumable" boots first.

@davidwyby You might try on a set of Herman Survivors (Walmart stocks a pretty decent selection in my parts), I have a lace up set that are the "wide" size and they fit me pretty well. I used to get square-toed boots since they usually have wider toes but these fit me fine and don't really flex much. With their Thinsulate liners they keep my feet nice and warm in the winter and I prefer wearing them when I'm doing lots of hiking or hill walking. I spent a few weeks trekking on hillsides wearing them and my feet were still pretty happy when I was done.

second resole on these. Red wing heritage moc toe. Went back with wedge sole this time. They were pretty expensive but I’ve had them since 2018. I rotate boots some but basically every day wear. I oil em. Take care of them within reason. I’d buy em again.

Any of you guys tried thorogood? I was gonna try a set on today at tractor supply but they didn’t have my size. Hear great things about em. Thought about getting a set. Because I like boots. Not that my new Irish setters or my other set of new red wings arent brand new in box but. I like boots.

We can get Thorogoof through work, they aren't terrible but my feet sweat terribly in them. They don't breathe at all.

I’ve never had a problem with steel toes, but I’ve tried redwings, Carolina’s, brama boots, throgoods, and still haven’t found a boot that the leather lasts more then a year. Granted I haven’t spent the most but I though the redwings would last a year. By 9 months they loose their waterproof. And yes I oil them. I had one pair of redwings repaired by then and wasn’t fully satisfied. Looking at whites or Wesco’s for the next pair.

Yeah the leather will loose it’s waterproof properties in all boots in time. I have a set of red wings with a goretex lining. They’ll keep you dry
