Were you in the garage at Custer's when I was throwin ideas around? I'm just starting to have some fun with it.
Don't think so Schallenger and I were outside running saws.

Does anyone use a silvey square grinder. we have one but I never use it. I suck at it and the chain goes dull too quick. It was just easier for me to use the USG. I hand file some round, and suck at it as well.

I'd like to practice some more though, and hopefully mature into a skilled square filer.
I use a silvey razur sharp 2, I have no idea what angles I'm at, I just kept dressing the wheel until it looked how I wanted it to when I grind.

It's fast and smooth and last just as good as round

The angles I checked were On the dressers. 23 and 14 If I remember right.

I had a new stihl grinder once but I never took it out of the box. Wish I had kept It now.

I generally use nothing but square, and file by hand, and try to maintain the factory angles (45 + 45 degrees).

I mostly drop the trees I cut, unless a storm dropped them, but they are generally clean, but mostly hard wood.

I can sharpen square just as fast as round, and I think it lasts just as long, and is faster.

I found this to be extremely useful in understanding it: http://www.madsens1.com/bnc_cb_angles.htm

I need to try this black magic voodoo chain stuff

Likely a dumb question but can you square file round ground semi? As in, is there any point?

I think Jason said he's on tank 4 or 5 on the chains I sharpened. No where near the factory angles. I think the top plate is 25-30°. I filed some stihl 404 square and the factory angles are about 12-15° on the top plate. Very blunt and they weren't even. Going to take a long time to get to the angles I want unless I round file it first.

I dismantled my Simington to fix up another grinder. Yeah, I'm needing to get it back together.

In the mean time I've been goofy filing for the practice.
I wish I had kept the old Silvey 300 for round grinding chains and taking race chains back. I could get the side plate straight up and down and not have to file so much.
