Jon was making some damn slick running .325 on it. Now we have to start over. :(
I've not filed any of the .325" square. I need to try it. I've got a loop on my 346 since the hippy sent me some 18" .325" bars.

Randy, I don't see much point to the Goofy, it results in a round side plate, the most important part of square, and a less defined corner.

Use the double bevel, try to keep in at about a 45 degree slant (to get the side plate right). I also drew 45 degree lines on my sharpening box to help me get the angles right, and your file will touch the top strap on the opposite side, which will also help to guide you.

W/o the lines on my box to guide me, I kept reverting close back to the old 30 degree angles, not a good thing.

I disagree with the first part. The top plate underneath angle makes the biggest difference in cutting speed. The less defined corner is weaker like round chisel. I like the 30° angles. :D

Your are talking about outside top plate (sharper/steeper), I'm referring to inside side plate (duller, less steep, not good).

When you change the outside top plate angle like that, you are making the side plate noticeably sharper. The corner & side plate do most of the work.

You are making very aggressive chain (good).

Nope the underside. The underneath top plate doesn't change with a goofy. The side plate only needs however thick the chip is. Some of the fastest chains are once filed round I've just filed. The thinner and less steep the faster it is to a point.

You can keep the side plate under 5 degrees of lean and have a steeper top plate angle like round.

With the goofy file you lose the hook if you use it right. The first chain I filed with a goofy was all wrong......it took a little while to learn it.

Mike a friend did RS to square in 325 and it was 50% faster then the RM it replaced on a 290 I was doing.
Was done on a modified swingarm.

I don't doubt it at all. Some of the semi chisel is real slow.

i just use plain ol boring LGX and husky round files. allows me to complete my firewood hacking duties in an acceptable amount of time. saw kevin do some square filing with good success a couple weeks ago. i may get into it just out of curiousity, i dont know enough about all the different angles and the consequences of messing them up.

MustangMike posted a link in post#134 about the angles. Helps explain the angles. Explains what's good and what's not.

Part 2 with the dozerdan Dan Henry woods ported 026 3/8 7T should be interesting to see how the chains orders change or not.
I know some folks file aggressive and that showed on the stock echo 39cc 3/8 7T.
