They won't kill a tree. Ants are there because of an existing problem, and only eat dead wood. Not accusing you of saying they killed the tree. Just posting a fact.
They won't kill it but they will eat out the center enough where wind will take it out. It will them a long time to do it though. Seen a few blow over or break cause the ants had eat out the center and the tree was hollow.

I've cut some big white oak the the first 3 feet was a carpenter ant hotel. Butt it off and a little saw gas and a lighter makes short work of the colony.

No they were live, but not much holding wood around. I cut a huge oak last year that had about six inches of wood all around. the rest was eaten out. Needless to say I was pissed.lol..thought I was going to get a lot of wood outta that one.

What I meant, Mad Dawg, is that the tree had issues, or the Ants wouldn't have been there.
