Starting a two stroke and holding it wide open probably doesn't really hurt it. But I don't do it to mine, lol. I tell saw customers that if they touch the ground with the chain for 1 second, probably every cutter tooth has sawn dirt three or four times.
No they start the saw, from dead cold and then hold it WOT for 3-5 seconds, I avoid WOT unless tuning or cutting wood....

Since that idiot I start the saw for customers, if they dont like it, they can move on....

Just think of all the saws that fly off the shelves of big box stores after a storm, into the hands of owners that never mixed gas, that also feel that safety equipment is an unnecessary expense.

I like these folks; they keep supplying me with low hour cheap saws to fix.

I like the Volvo SUV driving folks who wouldn't be caught dead with my Walmart Poulan 2150. Nope, they choose the caviar of saws: an MS170 from Ace Hardware. These folks usually also have a $6000 zero turn to mow their 1/4 acre yard. Must be written in to their deed restrictions or something.
I have a friend like this. He has to have the big names in everything. Polaris, Stihl, Gravely, Browning, Etc. He is in the market for a saw and wants a 250-251. I told him if he is going to buy a saw, a MMWS 461 would do him good!

I assume you are talking about the Stihl MS-250? The MS-250 is not on par with the other brands of things he likes that you mentioned other than coming from a reputable manufacturer and not being cheap. For the same price or even less if you shop around you can get the Echo CS-450 or 490. Far, far better saw for the money. Rural King gets $350.00 for the MS-250. I honestly cannot see how it is superior in any way other than looks to the $200.00 Poulan 5020.

I sell equipment for two different stores. The independent dealer is by far, less frustrating than the Farm Supply.....the know it all Harry Homeowner will flood a saw faster than a fat girl will eat a doughnut. When I bring up the topic of chaps, I usually here how expensive they are. To which I ask, "how much is your ER CoPay?".....

I see you are broadening your line of sarcastic quip comments to real life too.

I would have went with

well ok but keep your phone in your pocket and 911 on speed dial. You only have 20 seconds until you bleed out after you hit your artery...

I have a simple solution for selling any running chainsaw that I own. I offer to buy it back within one year for the same price they paid if they do not like it. I also offer to fix any minor repair for nothing and any major repair for parts cost only. So far, that has worked.

I never sell a saw that I do not like unless the buyer wants a non-runner for parts or wants to try to make it run.

The sad part of this thread is that even when selling saws for $50 or less people are still nitpicking this or that. I mean come on. Anything that starts and runs for that kind of money is a win for the buyer. But on the other hand, anyone trying tp get away with cutting a 2 ft tree with a $25 saw has a serious cranial defect to start with.

He'll probably put the chain on backwards after he sharpens it.

My money says he won't know WHEN it's time to put an edge on the chain...and you think he will know how to remove it?? LOL!

Mercman: Sounds like this guy might be gearing up to give you a bushel of "warrantee" headaches..... I'm with Bob, $25 for a running saw...Take it and be happy. If you can't start it after it was demonstrated to you during the sale, probably a good thing

Well he contacted saying he couldnt get it to run still. I told him bring it back and ill make it write. He asked about the other saw i showed him ( newer poulan). He baught that for 20 dollars and i was keep8ng the other saw.
Walking back to vehicle he asks can you have a quick look at other saw. I says sure. Look quick and see a pinched fuel line from when he fixed recoil.
He all excited and says i want that one too. So got an extra twenty for that newer poulan total 40. And two saws sold and gone.

Ok, I see now.

A few years ago, my church volunteered to help clean up some property that was going to turned into a retreat center. I brought my Poulan 2150 saw and Echo SRM-225 weedeater. One gent from another church brought his MS-170 fresh from Ace Hardware. The poor guy had never owned a saw before. Over the course of the day, the chain kept coming loose from the crappy no-tools tensioner setup. This also meant his chain took a beating every time it came off. I showed him how to retension the chain and sharpen it. My little Walmart special just kept on keepin' on.

Oh yes, I agree wholeheartedly. That was around three years ago, I wonder if that saw even runs now. A brand name and price tag is no substitute for knowledge and a willingness to take care of your machine. When I was at the dealership, I always marvelled at how many people would shell out 35k for a new Avalon but couldn't bring themselves to spend $25.95 on an oil change.

I ran into this "sell vs. fix" quandary with a Poulan Wild thing just yesterday. The owner gave me the saw and said, "Fix her if you can. I've had it with this saw. It's yours regardless. She simply does not run and I do not want her back even if you fix it."

The engine had good compression and a strong spark. All three fuel lines (primer and main) were mushy from age. I replaced them all. The saw's engine now starts and runs like it was new. Chain is sharp, bar is clean, oiler works fine, clutch is OK, and it's ready to cut. Now what?

Bottom line: I saved yet another one from the land fill.

List wild thing on CL for $65, take $55. I offer a 30 day guarantee that I'll fix it for free, if saw fails not due to operator error. eg: straight gassing.
