I agree with you Al … I have found it is easier to noodle with my saw than convert to splitter to vertical. I will half it, or quarter it, or whatever it takes, then just lift it into the splitter in horizontal mode. It goes much faster also.
Should've started out with a vertical splitter.

I get such good gas mileage with my MM 2188 with 8t rim, 20" extra aggressive self feeding chain matched to the peak power rpm.

Agreed.
Vertical splitting is hell.
I’ll work standing up over on my knees.
I have little use for a saw that can’t noodle.

I like vertical splitting. Sit on a log, and take advantage of great leverage from a low center of gravity and take the load off your back and core by lifting and moving chunks only with your arms, supporting your elbows on your knees.

Where did you get an 8t 3/8 micro spline rim?
Or did you turn down an old 8t picco rim?

I believe it’s stihl and I purchased from someone on the site a few years back. I’ll snap a picture tomorrow when I get to the garage.

I prefer vertical splitting. I get large rounds delivered to me that no one wants to deal with because of space and expense. They would have to pay to dump them, so they come here. Works out great for test wood as well.

The rounds I’m quartering are 18” thick and all better than 36” in diameter. Red oak.

Each quartered piece weighs better than 100#. Some less and some more. Not sure I’d wanna lift them all day onto a splitter. Pulling them to the vertical with a pickeroon is just easier for me.

I also have to move the wood from the cut area to the splitting area which is 1/4 mile away, so they have to be loaded into a bucket.

Maybe it’s time to turn in my man card. Over 50 does make a difference. Work with a 21 yo all day and it becomes quite clear. There isn’t a big enough Advil bottle in the world for how I feel this am..

Feel better Al!!! Part of the problem is age, the other part is you don't have the time to do it on a regular basis, so it gets you.

It is like riding the bike long distance, you had better "work into it" or it will get you. Nothing worse than hitting the wall and not being able to pedal any longer (in the middle of nowhere), trust me! (I tried to get back into it too fast after an injury and learned the hard way that I could not do what I used to do).

But now that the warm weather is here (mostly), if you keep doing some on a regular basis, you will get into it.

Sounds like, if you did not already do so, you need to build a Hybrid for yourself! My friend next door and I joke that at the end of the day, the lightest saw is your favorite!

tree service friend of mine who supplies most of the wood I get to cut on called me up yesterday morning. Needed a hand with this maple. ol' tree monkey 661 got a work out with the 60" bar.

edit - this is the same saw Scott was cant racing with, at Iowa GTG.

I can't believe the center of that tree was solid!
Any silver maple that size around here is a rotten tube of *s-word trying to kill ya.
