I use a raker gauge to even them up if I hit something and one side of cutters had to be filed more or something like that, so it will cut straight. I tune the chain to the saw and take the same amount of swipes off all the rakers by hand. My 7900 feels like the chain is dull if I use stock height, likes .040 or so on a 24 7 pin to cut and bore good. If I made it too aggressive, then it’ll come out with a few swipes like Treelife mentions.
What gauge are you guys using.
I use the husky roller ones a lot, but I wear through them pretty quick, they get sharper than the chains .

Thanks guys.
Any advice on the best place to grab them, I rarely step into a shop, and most don't have anything.
Now I mainly use them on chains that have come in and the gauges haven't been touched on to set a tooth then throw them on the grinder, done. I got very sick of filing those. I mark that gauge and make multiple passes so it doesn't harden the raker, then it's easy to hit by hand the next time. Just as with most things in life life they are kept up with maintenance isn't bad.

Well.. I think Home Depot sells an off brand kit that has them in it. Or mailorder?
Any saw shop should have them.

OR.....
If you use a straight edge, just put it over the top of the cutters and use a feeler gauge between straight edge and top of raker. I think that works too.

a 461 scott did last fall. Followed the progression.

stock - 38.9
after some porting - 26.7
some more tweaks not shown in vid - 25.2
final tweaks - 23.8

7pin, same 24" bar and chain throughout.

Which side of the bar cuts faster, the Stihl side or the Oregon side?
That's the big question.
