394/5 a hard saw to beat. They both looked fast to me. Don’t feel bad doc you did great on the solo. It looked torquey. It’s still breaking in I’m willing to bet.

Spent the day testing and tuning @SOS Ridgerider Solo 603. Saw runs damn good, but @Moparmyway 395 held 500 more rpm in the cut than it did.

The Solo had a bit more lean on power, possibly better for milling or a very long bar. It’s 103cc vs. the 395’s 95cc.

These are the testing vids. The 603 is a very good saw, but the 395 design is simply better (the porter as well). It’s likely the narrow piston skirts, the relatively small carb and the odd transfer design that holds it back.

The tip was buried, so the bar kept jamming with chips.

Hoping to try both saws out with longer bars at some point. These are pulling 36” 404RS with an 8pin.

603 vs 395

395 sounded like it was getting hot

When mine starts to lope at idle working it hard, I give it about 1/8-1/4 richer on the L till the lope stops and check the H. That’s all it needs. Takes fuel to make power imo.
Takes fuel to keep em cool too...

Great videos! Did you try either with 7pins? 8pin 404 with the bar buried is hard to clear chips! The chip jamming made it seem like they weren’t oiling well! Nice builds, that big knot was a good test!!
It also showed the difference between operators , it can make a huge difference! What is the difference in power head weight? Some of the older heavier saws can bite harder on the transition down because of weight, just something I have noticed myself, the heavier saw can leave bigger chips with the same chain!

The 603 is a pound or 2 heavier. May have accounted for Some of the cutting difference. Good point.

The 395 is a newer design and a quad port. Kevin did a super job on the machine work and port job for sure. It’s the most powerful beast I own at present.

The 603 has a bit more low end. It’s also 8cc larger, but it has odd looking transfers.

One forgets what pulling 36” of 404 with an 8 pin takes, because these big boys pulled it so easily.

We actually tried some other strong saws the same day, ported by other reputable people. They couldn’t pull less of it, even with a 7 pin.

So I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

I sure botched operating the saws that day, without a doubt. I was trying to let them sit on the dogs and pry on them, to feel the difference in torque. It sure made me look an ass:confused: lol. The Solo has more low end, but the Husky has more speed.
The Husky liked 8500-9500 in the cut, where the Solo could be lugged down to 7000, and even lower, and still keep going. Old school torque, for sure.

I’m a sucker for torque, so I’m very happy with how it turned out. The best thing is; I also have a @Moparmyway 395, so I get to have my cake and eat it too:D

And yes, we ran some other ported saws with less bar and smaller sprockets. Got less than 1/4 through the log, and just shut her down. The difference was that big. I remember thinking “Is this thing on?” Both the Husky and the Solo are that much more powerful than anything else I’ve ran.
