The cooler things run, the longer they will last.

Keep your muff vented, your chain sharp, and your tune a bit rich and your saw will last much longer than the next guys. I also like to give em brakes by rotating what I'm using (when I can). It is also easier to fill 3 or 4 saws at once, instead of the same one over & over.

Temperature drops very quickly. Less than a minute and it wouldn't melt the 400° temp stick.

I use a front outlet since it's the most direct way out.
I was checking it immediately after cutting,as fast as I could and was getting 375 to 400 and in a matter of a few seconds it would cool 200 degrees.

I checked as the saw fell to the ground after a 5.5-7 minute cut. I had the chain right where all I had to do was hold the throttle so no stopping to slap a wedge in. I usually get a break and refill after every single cut milling. Touching up the chain every other or 3rd cut.

What temp should one be looking for on the muffler with IR thermometer to start worrying about scoring going on inside?

Clutch bluing and plastic melt I solve that by running sharp chains.

First thing you should do is learn to sharpen when new at this. It's a good skill and can be done quickly as you get better at it. Make sure you are able to do it on site / in the woods. I take two chains for each saw and 2 or 3 saws the second chain is for total chain failure,. Multiple saws so you can stop once if sharpening needed. It's the 2 or 3 saw plan so you can have a productive day cutting.

If you can't sharpen then you have to take many more chains when doing yard trees!

I noticed a lot of huskys have plastic melt, I blame it on poor exhaust outlet aiming at plastic. A muff mod fixes this
