Well...

Metal air filters rule. I've never had a metal filter lose rpm.

Fwiw, to change from an early metal filter to a late 026/MS260 filter requires a different tank vent, a different carburetor, and a different rear cover.

This is @zeebee413 026. It lost 1000 rpm with the modified nylon airfilter. I repeated the test and it's true. But does it cut quicker?

This was the jug you saw in the NWP thread. It's 4 stroking at 16200. 220 psi compression.

Nice work on that saw. Very cool.

I timed the cuts from both videos. The results are really interesting.

WITHOUT air filter and tuned 1000 rpms higher
I got an average of 6.89 seconds

WITH air filter and tuned 1000 rpms slower I got an average of 6.75 seconds.

So the slower tune is actually faster. It's not faster by much but every little bit adds up.

I can only speculate that the fatter tune must be helping with the mid range rpms.

What do you guys think?

I think it's fascinating. Thank you Mike.

We always talk about putting bigger carburetors on saws, but what about bigger fuel lines? Get more gas to the carb to burn. Just thinking outloud.

My bet is that midrange in a ported saw, there's not enough fuel and it leans out more than we think in the cut. I may be really wrong.

I think this is where a good functioning dyno could provide some answers. Also seems like maybe we need to spend more time thinking about fuel delivery mods on our port jobs

Lol. He looked like he was trying to figure out what was wrong with the saw. Maybe the chain on backwards again. Lol

It was pretty funny. I just handed it to him and said try this. He had no idea. First time he pulled it over he stopped to look for a plug cuz it was so easy... Lol

Of what. One cut without the filter and one cut with the filter?
